Most comprehensive on science of Paleo but not enough on ...

After years of doing all variety of "diets" or eating lifestyles, from raw vegan to vegan to vegetarian to omnivore with calorie counting to eating-at-home-only to regular juice fasting for quick weight loss, I was so ready for a major change.

I grew up on a Persian diet so lots of meats and vegetables and rice and moderate amounts of bread, cheese, but also a ton of fruits and salads and the usual sweets all cultures adore. So deep inside, I always craved the meats when I was on vegan or vegetarian diets.

I knew that meat wasn't "the problem". I also knew that certain breads and pastas and noodles and foods in general would give me this heavy feeling after eating, and I wanted to get rid of that once and for all. So when a friend talked about her Paleo diet at length, I jumped onboard without hesitation. My husband and I went Paleo late January and we're in week 8 or 9 as I write this review. This was one of the books she recommended and I love the author and follow her on social media. Here's my review of this book.

4-stars. It is the most comprehensive book on Paleo, giving you every reason and logic behind why eating this way is to your ultimate health and longevity. I felt that she spent a long time - about 125 pages - giving you all the health issues you could develop if you eat gluten and processed sugar and how your body reacts to all of that crap and I read them. She lost me when she was talking about all the biology and anatomy but I followed along and appreciated it.

Then between 125-225 are her meal plans but they won't apply to everyone. She addresses major conditions such as high cholesterol, or diabetics or fibromalagia or other conditions before getting to "Squeaky Clean Paleo" which would apply to you if you don't fall under those conditions (I didn't so this section applied). I'm honestly not sure if I'll follow 30-day plans, which naturally refer to a lot of her recipes. And then finally Part 3 - the recipes section starts on page 225 but first a few lessons on chopping and slicing and cooking essential.

The book is about 400 pages, and my favorite recipe so far is the blueberry cobbler (see picture) but these recipes do look slightly complex. She's also huge into bone broth and sauerkraut which I'll have to see if I make - she has recipes. I love her no-nonsense approach with reasoning and science behind it so if you love nutrition and science, you'll LOVE this book. I am giving it a 4 star even though I highly recommend the book because I wish there were less sections on all the human ailment conditions and MORE on just Paleo - how to eat Paleo, how to make quick easy Paleo foods. I hope this helps and happy Paleo eating!

Not my favorite, but a good solid addition to the paleo cookbook collection

Overall, a good solid addition to our paleo cooking bookshelf. The first quarter of the book is focused on paleo education, the second quarter on various meal plans for different ailments, and the last half is dedicated to recipes. Some parts of the book are a bit of overkill. For example, there is a six-page long description of how to chop veggies! What I really like about the recipes is that there are a lot of photos, the recipes are overall pretty simple and don't require a lot of exotic ingredients. We have several favorites from this book, one that even the kids enjoy eating. While not my favorite paleo cookbook, it has earned a nice solid position on my paleo cookbook shelf.

Paleo diet meets functional medicine!

I love this book!

For anyone new to the Paleo approach to health and eating, Ms. SanFilippo's Practical Paleo is a perfect starting place. While the market has seen an explosion of books in the Paleo diet world over the last decade, this book is unique in that is combines the wisdom of the Paleo approach to nutrition with the unique insights that are emerging from the "functional medicine" approach to health.

She provides, for instance, 30-day meal plans that are tailored to specific health conditions, such as thyroid health and athletic performance. There's an especially delightful and informative discussion about gastrointestinal health (including a Poop Pageant in which she describes how stool character can be used to discern digestive problems that left me laughing until it hurt!). The book is packed with beautiful illustrations that make the discussions crystal-clear.

There are also a substantial collection of recipes, most of them unique that I have not seen before, consistent with the Paleo approach. Even readers who have read other Paleo cookbooks will discover many new twists on meals and snacks in this book.

All in all, Practical Paleo is a masterful piece of work.

A brother and sister alternate as narrators in Newbery Medalist Park's (A Single Shard) well-constructed novel, which takes place from 1940-1945 in Japanese-occupied Korea. The Japanese government forbids the Korean language to be spoken and the country's flag to be flown, and even forces Korean families like Tae-yul and Sun-hee's to change their names (Sun-hee becomes Keoko). Through the use of the shifting narrators, Park subtly points up the differences between male and female roles in Korean society; and the father's process of choosing the family's Japanese name speaks volumes about his strength and intelligence. As the war intensifies, each family member asserts his or her individuality, from Sun-hee, who continues to keep a journal after a soldier calls it "a crime against our Divine Emperor," to her uncle, who prints a revolutionary newspaper in hiding, to Tae-yul, who joins the Japanese army to avoid helping the military police capture his uncle only to be chosen as a kamikaze pilot. The son comes to an understanding of his father rather abruptly at the novel's close, and some readers may wonder why Tae-yul was not labeled a chin-il-pa ("lover of Japan" ). But, in the end, telling details provide a clear picture of Sun-hee and Tae-yul and their world. Readers will come away with an appreciation of this period of history and likely a greater interest in learning more about it. Ages 10-14.

Grades 6-9--Living in Korea in the 1940s was difficult because the Japanese, who occupied the country, seemed determined to obliterate Korean culture and to impose their own on its residents. Sun-hee and her older brother, Tae-yul, still go to school every day, but lessons now consist of lectures and recitations designed to glorify Japan. To add to their unhappiness, everyone, adults and children alike, must give up their Korean names and take new Japanese ones. Sun-hee, now called Keoko, and Tae-yul, newly named Nobuo, tell the story in alternating narrative voices. They describe the hardships their family is forced to face as Japan becomes enmeshed in World War II and detail their individual struggles to understand what is happening. Tension mounts as Uncle, working with the Korean resistance movement, goes into hiding, and Tae-yul takes a drastic step that he feels is necessary to protect the family. What is outstanding is the insight Park gives into the complex minds of these young people. Each of them reacts to the events in different ways-Sun-hee takes refuge in writing while Tae-yul throws his energies into physical work. Yet in both cases they develop subtle plans to resist the enemy. Like the Rose of Sharon tree, symbol of Korea, which the family pots and hides in their shed until their country is free, Sun-hee and Tae-yul endure and grow. This beautifully crafted and moving novel joins a small but growing body of literature, such as Haemi Balgassi's Peacebound Trains (Clarion, 1996) and Sook Nyul Choi's The Year of Impossible Goodbyes (Houghton, 1991), that expands readers' understanding of this period.

Easy to read book on Korea pre and during WWII though the voices of a brother and sister

I purchased the book for my grandchildren but read it first so we could discuss it after they had read it. I think they will enjoy the story; it is easy to read and is told in both the sister and brother's voices in each chapter. It provides a good, easy to understand, if limited, idea of Korea prior to and during WWII. Courage is portrayed in different ways by all the characters and will provide many opportunities to discuss with your young reader the meaning of courage, family unity, obligations to family and community and how easy it is to misunderstand someone and their intentions if we rely only on our assumption of them.

I'd wish it wasn't this short

The story in the novel is good, following two young Korean children during the time of the Japanese invasion and subsequent occupation of the peninsula. The innonence in their voices, when describing events that you know what they amount to, but are fully out of reach from their almost pure minds, is shivering and at times haunting. It is a "don't forget" testimony to the horrors of war, but still a more positive perspective than one that can be gathered from those who knew nothing but suffering, or even those who even didn't make it. The only reason for not giving it 5 stars, as stated in the title, is that I found the novel quite short, and I wish more details, something that would give us a better understanding of the characters, was given, in essence, to make the story deeper. There is nothing wrong with this, of course, and that's just my opinion, so I'd still recommend it to anyone interested in Korea, WW 2, or a children's tale of endurance during hard times.

This is the story of five years in the life of a Korean family during the Japanese occupation of their homeland at the beginning of WWII. They were determined to maintain their Korean identity under the noses of the Japanese soldiers who intended to destroy their nation. All Koreans were forced to adopt Japanese names--hence the title: Kim Sun-hee became Keoko during this time. Set in Korea from 1940 to 1945, the story is told alternately by the 10-year old daughter and her 13 year old brother. There are elements of stifled celebration, pathos, great courage, suspense and a satisfying ending.

The author's note is informative. Portions of the story come from her own family, and she recounts other examples of Japanese domination of the Korean people. She also includes a bibliography for further reading.

I really liked the book (and I am an old lady!). It's a piece of history that I knew nothing about--I have the impression that the Japanese were trying to do to Korea what Germany tried to do the the Jews! It's worthwhile reading for higher elementary grades and above.

If you want tasty and easy, then this book is for you.

Another great book by these authors but this one includes savory pies as well which are truly delicious. Makes the pot pies we are used to eating positively boring. The recipes are easy, use the ingredients that you have in your cupboard and come out as you would hope. I can't wait to see what this brother and sister team come up with next.

I have been having fun eating my way through this cookbook. It offers wonderful and approachable recipes for the beginner and leaves room for creativity by the more experienced home cook. I love the no-nonsense approach to the usual intimidating suspects, such as pastry & bread. Recipes are presented simply and come together easily. There is a nice variey of sweet & savory and contrast of classic & cultural diversity in the recipe selections. Mari-Louis and Callie have brought their love of food and family with humour and finesse to the table in their second charming publication. Worth the $5.00 international shipping rate and was received within the week. Can't wait to try the Macadamian Nut Tart next!

Outstanding interviews that really capture the essence of a starting a company

This book is a great read for people interested in startups and entrepreneurship, it's essentially 30+ case studies of how the founders think about their companies, what types of challenges they deal with, how they emotionally deal with them, etc. These founders discuss current issues such as the difficulty of fundraising, particularly in a down economy such as the one recently in 2009. Some of the interviews are very personal and talk about topics of personal and emotional struggle for the founders, I was surprised to read how detailed many of these interviews were. There's something for everyone considering the breadth of topics discussed and the diverseness of the founders-GitHub for example has a very different perspective on raising money than most of the other founders interviewed.

The depth in the interviews is impressive. I'm subscribed to a lot of different online web sites and I haven't found many interviews that go into this amount of depth before, though Mixergy comes to mind when I think of interviews in similar formats. I was surprised to see that many of the founders don't consider themselves successful today. The quote about Dennis Crowley from Foursquare made me realize that most of these guys are hungry and many of them mentioned continuously setting their own bar for achievement higher as they continued to grow (Weebly comes to mind).

I really enjoyed reading this. Since a lot of these startups are still relatively young, I think it's going to be interesting to see how they progress and look back at the interviews a few years down the road from now when they've developed a bit further. These interviews seem to be done at the right time, when the founders are young (which also makes it easy to relate to) and before they hit their massive adoption curves (again, easy to relate to since many entrepreneurs are in the same stage).

The Reality

This book helps not-yet-entrepreneurs understand what the process is really like. If you read stories about other entrepreneurs, you can get the sense that they always knew what they were doing, even though they were clueless at the time.

Interviewing a younger generation of founders really relates more the start ups young people will be starting now, rather than reading about jeff bezos, steve jobs, or bill gates.

Great information about startups

This book is a great source of information about how the founders of many successful startups think, how they responded to challenges, and insight into their personalities. A lot of startups face similar challenges, so if you're a founder (or an employee at a startup), learning from others can be very helpful. The book is easy to read in any order; each interview is self contained.

Founders at Work by Jessica Livingston, an earlier and fairly similar book, is also a great resource; Andrew Warner's Mixergy podcast is useful as well. If you are really interested in startups, I would suggest all three.

Great book to learn about marine pollution

Dr. Judith Weis has written a book about marine pollution that is very accessible to a variety of people, from the layperson to professionals in the field. She makes no assumptions about what the reader knows and starts at the very beginning to define pollution, food chains, biomagnificaiton and more. Dr. Weis covers the range of pollutants from the more familiar pollutants DDT, nutrients and oil to emerging pollutants such as invasive species and endocrine disruptors. Although the text does not include sources, there are abundant sources listed for each chapter in the back of the book. This book is part of the "What everyone needs to know" series by Oxford University Press, and in this function, it is an excellent tutorial and reference for anyone interested in pollution. Dr. Weis has done extensive research in chemical pollutants, and is to be commended for bringing her knowledge to the general public in an easy to understand book.

Reflecting the longstanding traditions in communication studies, the handbook presents rhetorical and relational perspectives that show students the different emphases of the instructional communication process. Although the two perspectives are compared and contrasted, the handbook is careful not to view these two traditions as polar opposites.
Covering a wide range of topics, this handbook will appeal to students interested in becoming primary or secondary teachers, higher education faculty members, community educators, directors of organizational learning, communication consultants, and training and development specialists.

This was a required textbook for a course; turns out an actually enjoyable book as well. Great for anyone in the teaching field or any position which requires elements of training or instruction. Good for HR professions and academics. Highly recommended!

Reflects the Current Research of Distinguised Professors

The worldwide method of teaching used these days consists of communication in the form of a teacher trying to impart knowledge to students. The key word here is communication. The student must understand what the teacher is trying to say, the teacher must understand if his message is getting across to the student.

This book investigates instructional communications. The book is divided into four units:

1. focuses on the foundations of instructional communication

2. examines instructional communication from a rhetorical perspective.

3. examines instructional communication from a relational perspective.

4. describes how to conduct instructional communcation research as wella s how to practice effective instructional communication.

The chapters that make up these units are written by distinguished professors in the general area of communication studies from some of the major universities around the country.
