Way too old

This book is way too old, it's only really good for giving you ideas of what to try. The versions of all the software that this book is based on are often times impossible to obtain now, many of the hadoop sites are in the habit of removing old versions of their projects so you can't download them. For example, the book is primarily based on using hadoop 0.20 and/or cloudera's hadoop version three. It's no longer possible to download those, if you have an old version then hold on to it in case you need it.

None of the installation instructions in the book will work with the newer versions of applications. In some cases the entire idea of how you would run and use a tool has changed. Also, the entire way that HDFS and Map-reduce works has changed since YARN was added, so the books explanation of that is old.

The book often omits important details like which jar you need to use for a particular piece of code. Classpath and dependency issues are always a nightmare to deal with and the book offers little help with this. He should list everything that you would put in a maven dependency. He often omits the import lines in java code, so you have little idea which class he is referring to in the code.

There are often times when he requires you to use software written by him, such as the "File Slurper" that Alex wrote. I am very wary of using any code like that, if it doesn't have the support of the apache/hadoop community then it's very likely to be out of date and unsupported sooner or later. I skipped any chapter I saw like that. I kept seeing this reference to a bash script called "run.sh" in the book, and could not figure out what he was referring to. I could find no such shell script in any software I downloaded. I think it must be a bash script in his git project, like I said I don't want to depend on any code that is not supported by the community.

There were also COUNTLESS compatibility issues I found when I tried to do anything. Almost no two pieces of hadoop software work together out of the box. It's so bad that using anything besides cloudera's hadoop was practically impossible. I am not a stupid guy either.

Here is my advice to you:
1. Use cloudera's pre-built CDH VM, at least at first. I used the CDH 4.5 pre-built VM, and that is the only thing I got to work.
2. Do not follow any installation instructions in the HIP book
3. Do not follow any installation instructions on the hadoop websites
4. Only follow installation/re-configuration instructions found in Cloudera's manual for CDH 4.5 installation
5. Do not deviate your configuration from what is norm. For example, I encountered a lot of bugs when I tried switching to java 7.
5. You might want to hold off from buying this book until a newer issue is released
6. If you use maven for dependencies, make sure you get your hadoop dependencies from the cloudera repository, not maven central
7. Instead of reading the book, just go into each of the hadoop project's websites. Skip their installation instructions like I said before, but try to follow any tutorials you see, and try to practice using everything you read.
8. After you figure out how to do everything, only then should you try to install stuff from scratch on a new VM. If you try to set up a VM on your own from the start, all the frustration will kill your motivation to learn hadoop.

The one thing this book was good for was giving me ideas of what things to try, which is why I give it two stars instead of one.

85 advanced hadoop techniques

"Hadoop in Practice" covers recipes/techniques for working with Hadoop. The 85 techniques range from pure Hadoop to related technologies like Mahout and Pig. There was good discussion of algorithms.

Java is definitely a pre-requisite. The book says you should have some knowledge of HDFS and MapReduce. Yet chapter one starts with "what is hadoop." It reads better as a review than an intro and doesn't fit with the rest of the book. It also assumes you haven't installed/started Hadoop. You really should read an intro book first and skim chapter one.

I particularly liked the chapters on MapReduce and performance. The overview of iostat and vmstat was clear and better than in many UNIX books. I also liked the AST explain plan. The techniques about when to use joins and sorts seemed like they would be in "Hadoop in Action" as well. Yet the comparison of different types fit well.

Each chapter begins with a conceptual overview which was very useful. The book also contains many diagrams to add clarity.

Too much and too little

I'm a Hadoop beginner. If you are too, this is not the book for you. The author has stuffed a bit about every conceivable Hadoop-related application of every related Apache project into this book and, beyond being a useful overview discovery guide, it is simultaneously too wide and too shallow (or brief) to be useful to those without substantial knowledge of many of the topics discussed. I'm sure some of the optimization material is useful to those with well-formed questions but this format does not lend itself well to a reader's bootstrap effort on the subject of Hadoop. In all fairness, it does not claim to. Just sayin'.

Short and Exceedingly Sweet

This is my favorite discourse book by Paramahamsa Nithyananda. It is a collection of question and answers. His answers are incredibly beautiful and uplifting and the insights (clicks as he likes to call them) abound and are transforming. I love being able to pick it up and in just a few pages feel touched and transformed at the deepest level of my being.

Simply delicious!

This is a wonderful book that "works" on three different levels:

First, it gives the history of the most important sweets around the world, and traces their lineage and background. For example, I never knew that baklava can be traced to ancient Greek honey cakes, or that American apple pie derives from Dutch tarts.

Second, it provides the ethnological context for each sweet and describes the national, religious, and social significance of many humble desserts. For example, the discussion of cacao in Latin America and chocolate sweets in Mexico that combine ingredients from all over the world, or the detailed description of the "baklava wars" that rocked the Middle East and the Balkans. In that respect the book brings out many interesting connections; for instance reading about the Nepalese halwa made me think of similar Lebanese and Middle Eastern delicacies with similar sounding names. The final result, when I tried it, closely resembles my version of halva. This sent me to the book’s index, trying to figure out the possible route of transmission.

Lastly, and most importantly, the book gives numerous unique and wonderful recipes from every corner of the world. The bibliography is as legitimate as you may find in an academic book, and the Roufs trace every recipe, often to authoritative local chefs or to online sources, and sometimes to the best and most authoritative source of all -somebody's grandma.

If I could change something about the book, I would have the desserts indexed alphabetically -now they are listed under their respective countries/regions of origin. Oh, and wait, about the "baklava wars"...

The intimacies, culture, and history of sweet treats around the world: a food adventure

We like to use the green Michelin guides when we travel - it helps us learn about all of the intimacies, culture, and history of a place. This book is like a Michelin guide for, well, sweet treats around the world. It puts sweet treats in the context of all that is unique and interesting about a country, how things evolved, and why and how we eat the sweets we eat.

More than just an encyclopedia, it is an adventure. I find myself getting immersed in a country (e.g., the Netherlands) and learning about my favorite cookie, the "speculaas", and I have a big "aha!" moment. Then I jump into Australia and learn about the history of the beloved Pavlova (the meringue, cream, and strawberry dessert that I make in the springtime) and that it is named for dancer Anna Pavlova who visited in the 1920s, perhaps representing her tutu and her light as air style.

Very readable ... and so logical to approach sweet treats from an anthropological point of view. I have enjoyed learning about the foods of the places I've been and the places I hope to go. PLUS -- my eyes have been opened about American sweet treats, from Red Velvet cake to M&Ms. I think of myself as a foodie, and this sophisticated yet down-to-earth book is right up my alley (and yes, I have lots of little sticky tabs in the recipes section. The first thing I'm going to make is the lemon souffle that Mrs. Sivertson brought from Norway.)

"Sweet Treats around the World" is a lovely combination of being extensively researched and at the same time, written from the heart. Both my husband and I are really enjoying the book.

Folks yall know were forevermore braggin about th fine products we get at Amazon. Well, this is no exception let me tell yew!!! We got it six months early for th 18 year old for his first course in draftin. Only they don't call it draftin anymore, it's all on computer and they call it CAD. If ya don't know what that means then yer probably a wanker and don't need ta be readin this review. Close out Amazon right now and go look at some cats on Youtube. If yer still here let me tell yew about this book. We wanted th 18 year old ta get a head start on his draftin course and this book was required. Why ya may ask would they want this book when they got tutorials in AutoCAD, Solidworks and th like. Well, it just so happens that this book has a wealth a practice drafwins in it an ya don't have ta draw them by hand. Ya can use AutoCAD. Not only that but folks come on descriptive geometry is descriptive geometry; ellipses is ellipses and many a th techniques ya use ta draw such by hand can be used in drawing with a computer. Not only that but it give ya all sorts a accepted practices such as line width and th like that th AutoCAD books and such don't go into. They expect ya ta know this. They're just tryin ta teach ya autocad. So all you buddin machinists and engineers and designers out there. Ya not goin ta cheat reality. Ya got ta know it all. Now, how does this book compare with some old classics? Well, I guess th best a th classics is Technical Drawing by Giesecke. Now folks Giesecke is one fine book for learnin technical drawin. We started all th kiddies off on it. We got one a th old copies, sixth edition or somethin', You know, th one with th pictures a dweebs in ties an white shirts doin draftin. Well, as I said all th kiddies started off doin a technical drawin class in homeschool. Some liked it, some didn't. Giesecke has some very simple drawin and they grow in complexity. We took advantage a that and schooled our young'uns in technical drawin up ta their limit and no further. For learnin draftin th old fashioned way, ya can't beat Giesecke! But this book by Goetsch!!! Now that's a whole nuther thing!!! As I said ya got yer basic drawings, how ta draw a circle ellipse etc but then ya got a section on geometric dimensioning and tolerancing that's near worth th price a th book. Now, ya just can't get enough GD&T folks! And then this book relates it directly ta drawin'. Ya got about 30 exercises most a them drawins in this sections that ya have ta apply GD&T principles to. AWESOME!!!! And it's just more up to date than Giesecke. So, if ya just want ta learn ta do technical drawin and ya can find a copy a Giesecke for thirty cents like we did, get and enjoy. I know th kiddies love it. But, if yer serious about draftin or yer class requires it grab yerself a copy of Technical Drawing and Engineering Communication. Ya won't be disappointed!!!! Holy S***!!!
