About the Author
Claudia A. Black, MSW, PhD, is a renowned lecturer, author and trainer internationally recognized for both her pioneering and contemporary work with family systems and addictive disorders. She designs and presents workshops and seminars, authors books and interactive journals, produces educational videos and consults to various healthcare programs in the United States and abroad. Dr. Black is currently the Clinical Consultant of Addictive Disorders for The Meadows and a Senior Fellow for the Meadows Institute in Wickenburg, Arizona.Dr. Black is the recipient of a number of National awards including the Marty Mann Award, the 1991 SECAD Award, and the NCA's Educator of the Year. She is also the past Chairperson of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics, presently serving on their Advisory Board and most recently, in celebration of Al-Anon's 50th anniversary, spoke on Capitol Hill to members of Congress, constituents and representatives of various addiction and treatment organization.Black's books generate wide appeal. When we grow up with fear and shame we become adults who live with fear and shame. Accompanying these intense feelings is a pervasive, chronic sense of loss, ranging anywhere from serious to profound. The sensation of this loss goes by various names - unhappiness, hopelessness, depression, emptiness, insecurity, anxiety, boredom. Whatever the words we use, these wounds have troubled our very spirit. We need to let go of the fear and shame. We need to change our course by putting the cause of our pain in its proper perspective.

What you might be feeling depends on what you felt when the original wounding began, compounded by your life experiences from that time on. It will be difficult to look back at those troubling times but this is where your recovery begins.

To change course, be it a minor shift or a major turn in your life, does not mean giving up who you are - it means letting go of who you are not.

It means letting go of your pain. You are not your pain. You will need to walk through the pain alone again as a helpless vulnerable child. Remember, whatever you experienced as a child, your perceptions and interpretations were those of a child. The perceived belief that you were worthless or bad is not true. You never were bad or unworthy, and you are not today. It is my hope that, in time, you will be able to say and to believe in your heart, "I am good. I am adequate. I am worthy."

It means letting go of an undesirable family script. You are no longer an unwitting character in someones else's life now that you understand you have the freedom to choose.

Each insight into your past and its connection to your present is like turning on the light in a dark room. It doesn't change what is there, but now that you can see where you are going, you can go in and out freely without harm. Fear no longer drives you - freedom moves you.

Each of these awarenesses bring you new choices. Each new awareness is a turning point.

I have purchased several books on this subject and found this one to be the best. One bit of advice, however, order it in hard copy (not Kindle) because you will be working with charts and tables fir which you cannot increase the font and the font showing up on the Kindle will be so small you can't read it without a magnifying glass. Also, you'll need to flip back and forth to some of the tables at the end of the book. Very well written, author knows her stuff. Highly recommend this book to those who are trying to live a good life but keep having childhood abandonment issues influence their thoguhts and choices.

Great read for counselors and clients

I bought this on a recommendation from my therapist, who told me that Claudia Black was an excellent writer and covered issues related to codependence well. Although I have not yet finished the book I am so far engrossed in the reading and find that I would recommend this to not only anyone who struggles with abandonment issues but also those working professionally in mental health. It is a great place to start if you want a thorough introduction to the topic, and I feel that it has helped me personally thus far.

Wonderful travel thru scary places

This book takes you to uncomfortable places that we tend to try to pretend didn't happen but this book encourages us to go there for a short time so we can heal from our pasts. It does not leave us in a place of hurts but gently nudges us to be brave and work thru so that we are not stuck in our old behaviors that have molded us but bring us to an even better version of ourselves so we can learn how to act and react in ways we were not taught before. Healthy, productive ways.

This is a well-studied but easy-to-read book on the role of nuclear power in climate change mitigation. The reader will be introduced to the facts showing that many NGOs are surprisingly lobbying heavily against nuclear but not so much against fossil fuels while they communicate that the most challenging issue to the global community is the climate change. The reader will get familiarized to the health risks of nuclear power stations and irradiation. In this book those risks are evaluated not in vacuum as sometimes is the case but against the drawbacks of other options. Energy production is a field in which there are no perfect choices since the size of the fossil fuel industry has grown that great. The reader will be introduced in the risks of nuclear proliferation and might have a surprise on that issue. Are there more safe nuclear reactor options available than the current uranium ones? This subject is covered also.

Increasing energy consumption is vital to the development of the developing countries. From where that energy must come? The ultimate message of the book is that the climate challenge is so huge that no-fossil energy technologies cannot be ruled out a priori. We will need all of them to replace fossil fuels. When someone writes a book on a complicated issues there are of course mistakes and errors.The original Finnish edition of this timely book was written so that readers were gathered to point errors in the content and to bring those into the knowledge of the writers via social media. This was a demonstration of both the scientific attitudes of the writers and the power of social media as a way to improve content of written texts. Those few mistakes and errors found in the first Finnish version are corrected in this updated English edition.

Climate Gamble Climate Gamble takes on the challenge of tackling some of the most controversial issues of the energy policy debate. The outset of the book is quite clear – according to virtually every international study we will have no chance in reaching our climate commitments without the aid of nuclear power. Like it or not, this is a fact according to the studies cited in the book. The authors then go on to painstaking depths in busting various myths for example regarding the dangers of nuclear power.

The book is very easy to read and works as an excellent introductory material to anyone who wants to read balanced views about this source of energy. One doesn’t have to like nuclear power but one can’t either ignore its various benefits over most of the other conventional energy sources.
This book should be compulsory reading for anyone who wants to have an informed view of the debate regarding climate change mitigation and energy.

This short, 100-page, book packs a punch. The answer to the question in the subtitle is "Yes"; wittingly or unwittingly, environmentalists, mostly as the result of fear built on lack of information, are hindering their own goals with regard to global climate change by opposing nuclear. The coming fourth generation of nuclear will provide clean, safe, abundant and affordable energy to the world, but only if environmentalists get behind it instead of opposing it. Great book!

I am an Operating Systems professor at Mexico's largest university (UNAM), and the author of an Operating Systems textbook in Spanish (http://sistop.org). I stumbled upon Arpaci-Dusseau's book, and *loved* its way of explaining and concept clarity. With its "three easy pieces", it has a very different approach than most books on the field, maybe just comparable to Finkel's 1988 "Operating Systems vade-mecum".

Strongly recommended for students, professors, and people interested in learning more by themselves.

I'm a student of one of the co-authors and of course we have to read this book for class. The book is available for free which is uber cool on their half, but it's also the most readable textbook I've ever read. For such a dense, abstract, and obscure subject, it's so easy to follow, and written in completely plain English, aside from simply defined jargon terms that of course come with the territory. I never have that feeling of my eyes glazing over in petrified confusion that I do with math or other theory textbooks. The book even has jokes in it. Other books really should take a page out of the style of this one. I didn't know such clarity was even possible. It's super good for what it is.

Just the book I needed to feel at home with OS concepts.

I have read great books. But most of them have already been reviewed by other greats. I fail to understand how this book is missed out. Hence, I am compelled to write my first review.

As the title says 'three pieces'. Exactly three and very important three. It written beautifully. It makes us ask, think and also answer very crucial concepts and missing-links in the idea-tree. At the end a great feeling of have understood something (the feeling that you are at home with the idea/concept). This can be read just a novel, over a coffee. Or with little more investment type and execute the source code provided in the text.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone with some knowledge about OS whose heart burns for that extra glue to connect all the accumulated, disconnected floating ideas. I cannot comment on how it would be for a fresher wanting to learn OS fundamentals with this.

Great Intro- Significantly Cheaper than the US edition

I was taking an SEC and financial markets class and had no background in the markets at all. I had a required text but it wasn't user friendly and a little over the top with the technical information. I previewed a few books and decided on this one. It was great. It explained everything in terms I could understand (I'm an MBA student) and wasn't painful to read like the other book. Plus the US edition of this books retails for somewhere around $200. I was able to purchase the international edition for about $50-- well worth it.

good book

Book came in by expected delivery date and was in the condition that it stated it would be in. Great price too...saved me a bunch from having to buy my professor's select custom made book that was essentially just excerpts of this book slapped together with a 3x price tag. Yeah...university living is a scam but at least buying this book wasn't! The content itself is very informative and easy to understand for someone who isn't majoring in Finance.

A very scientifically reasoned approach. Presents the recent Creation view of mankind [not the 7 days literal, or 6,000 year old earth]. This view is God could take the billions of years to accurately make all the universal bodies and Laws to fall into place, but that to create man was a progressive approach since there is evidence of some kind of ancient bipedal mammals similar to man and ape, but since no intermediates exist in the fossil record, God created them to serve a planned purpose, until the final Creation of Adam and Eve [literally, not from an evolutionary construct]. Adam and Eve were hand Created by God Himself literally but anywhere from 10,000 - 100,000 years ago. Great informational armor for you to paraphrase to your high schoolers.

The case for simple faith is made stronger

This is a fine book written by a serious author. The approach is somewhat in the middle of the alternatives to naturalistic evolution, much more faith confessing than ID, but very much accepting of the soundness of scientific data and dating, which is troubling for those who wish to begin with the Scriptures. Still I found the author to be consistent and remarkably humble in his willingness to follow the facts as science has uncovered them. Unfortunately, much of what science has discovered ended up weakening his original conclusions substantially, which is dutifully recorded in the 10 year update to the book. It is hard to conceive of fundamental evangelical faith in the Bible surviving the stretching of time that must happen to the genealogical record when you accept as fact new data showing humans arising some 175,000 years ago. So as seems to be happening throughout our culture today, the middle course is weakened, and the rationale for the more extreme views becomes stronger.

It appears that many of faith will rather continue to trust the Bible and 6 days of creation, since the data of science appear to shift with every new discovery. Better to trust God whose Word never changes than in compromises that must be adjusted to account for limited observations of times and places that no man has seen, that could very likely be shown some day soon once again to be in error.

Heady but helpful

Though at times this work leads readers through the deeps weeds of biology, microbiology, genetics and the uncomfortable topic of non-human hominids, the work is a helpful source on being able to speak to the origins of humanity with more than, "the Bible says . . ." Which is a statement many non-believers will not listen to to its conclusion.

I love this book. Tolle describes ancient truths and applies them to life in the 21st century in a way that is inspiring and comforting. I took away from this book three simple, yet profound ideas. First and foremost, Tolle believes that we are all connected to each other and that everything we do matters and has an impact on our world. His second idea lies in the power of listening: he suggests that if we can quiet our egos long enough to truly listen, it is possible to feel a sacredness and inner harmony where everything has its perfect place. And lastly, the author speaks of the power of awareness. The moment you notice a pattern of behavior that is no longer working for you, you are a success.

Reading this book reminded me of the writings of two of my favorite authors: Ariel and Shya Kane. In their books Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment, Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation and How To Create a Magical Relationship[, the Kanes teach a fun and easy way to live fully and joyously in the moment. Their approach is practical and magical at the same time. If you like Tolle's work you're bound to love the Kane's. All of these books are treasures to be enjoyed.

I loved this book! It holds true power and purpose! Recommend to all my friends and family!
I would recommend having a pen/highlighter present when reading this though! It makes it easier to take in it and really go back and reflect on the worlds. There are many powerful messages in this book!

The best book I've ever read.

This book is phenomenal. Maybe I'd say it is the best book I've read also because of the timing that I read it, during difficult times. The book provides great spiritual guidance steeped from ancient wisdoms, yet is easy to read due to it being written in modern times. Though the book does not have religious overtones, (maybe Budism?) though references to religions, it actually helped me understand the Bible a lot better. The entire book is about consciousness, being present, living in the now. Because of that, some may not grasp the essence of this book. However, I've always believed that even if you can get one good thing that you can take with you for your life then it was worth the read.
