Provides the next step of wine appreciation in clear terms

This book does a terrific job of simplifying the complex science that goes into winemaking. Ever wonder what some of the terms mean on the back of a wine bottle? This book is a quick read that provides consise and relatable explanations. It is not a book on how to make wine. It is not a book for scientists. It is a non-technical book for anyone that wants to learn more about the process and options from the dirt to the glass.

well written but not quite comprehensive

Clearly written and a quick read, but don't be fooled: there is a lot of solid technical information here, including one of the best published reviews of filtration, and an excellent overview of additives. Clarity here is due to good writing and careful exposition, not by dumbing down the topic. The book was written for classroom use, for instance by students preparing for the WSET Diploma Examination, and also succeeds as a text for someone who understands the basics of winemaking but wants to know the why as well as the what.

However, the chapter on fermentation is a bit brief for its intended role as a textbook, and faults merit only a few pages. A lack of a bibliography (other than a few scattered references to journal articles) also counts against it. I recommend supplementing with another text such as Rankine's "Making Good Wine" (ISBN 140503601X) or a reference work such as Jackson's "Wine Science".

(Note: A newer edition is now available, it might address some of the above criticisms.)

This is a book worth owning and reading, but it will not provide all the answers.

About the Author
Author’s Bio Liam O’ Flynn has been an English teacher in St. Aidan’s Community College in Cork for the past twenty years. In that time, he has taught to a whole range of abilities and ages with considerable success. He is 43 years of age and single but in a long term relationship. A resident of Clonmel, he is a dedicated member of the writers’ group there. Liam’s interests are: descriptive writing, nature walks, golf and fishing. He keeps a log of the birds who visit his garden, as one does, and has reached the grand total of 32 species. To the peregrine falcon and the sparrow hawk, species number 31 and 32, he has only two words: go away. His next book shall be an adventure/fantasy book for teenagers.

This book will seriously improve your creative writing.
It will also improve your vocabulary - it has mine, I even keep a `vocabulary notebook' now. It is ideal for students at any level of ability, as it guides the student through five levels of skill by classifying words in grids, and providing copious examples of five levels of descriptive writing from Basic Sentences (Level 1) to Complex Writing (Level 5). The author also explains how to plan your writing with the grids.

All five of the sensory modalities (VAKOG) are presented throughout - Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic, Olfactory, and Gustatory. So, everyone's dominant learning modality is included.
It is easy to see how useful this book is for teachers, parents, students of English, and for novices like me who have only just begun dipping a tentative toe in the sparkling and stimulating pool of creative writing.

The various narrative styles of writing are described simply and comprehensively.
Figures of speech are defined and described, and the author provides numerous examples of each. He also flags the use of these figures of speech in the sample essays of the five Levels of descriptive writing. The use of examples throughout is fundamental to the student's progress towards looking at the world with an `artist's eye'.
And there is much, much more.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, right at the end of the book we are presented with a treasure trove of 200 magical words, and as a bonus, the most beautiful word in the English language! The exercise suggested by the author using these magical words will definitely improve your English skills.

Very impressed with this!

I bought both the Writing with Stardust book and workbook and as a package they are excellent.
I love the way the books are designed in grids of 10 words. It makes it
really user friendly and so simple to learn from. The essays
are really impressive and are packed with unique and original expressions a lot
of which were completely new to me. For example "the monk hum of the bees" is very creative.
There are a lot of useful tips and techniques on how to write as well as what to write.
I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to improve and enhance their writing skills.
It's a very clever book and I loved it.

Really Enjoyed this book

Really Enjoyed this book.
Very well written and at times laugh out loud funny which is a surprise given the subject matter.
Joe Sulllivan proves to be an interesting narrator and while nobody in their right mind would envy his situation he seems, on paper at least to be a reliable source of information. This book will appeal to fans of both prison memoirs and true crime with a host of infamous names appearing in the pages.

Spell check/grammar check anyone?

I bought this book and the first book- Tiers & Tears at the same time. That was a mistake. The grammar and spelling are so bad that I haven't been able to finish Tiers & Tears and forced myself to read Cellmates, Pals, Punks & Double Bunks largely because I was so irritated at myself for spending $40 on two books that obviously never went through the editing process. The stories could have been so much better if someone had taken the time (and effort!!) to read the book(s) before they went to print. I've never spent so much money on two books that weren't college text books so this was not only painful to read, but a pain in my wallet.

A useful text for math and economics

I have an old copy of this text and was happy to find that was still in print. I used it during my graduate work back in the early 70's and found its review of mathematical principles and its application of those principles to economics most understandable and useful. It remains relevant.

How to train a masochist

A novel that blends submission and sadomasochism. Aristotle Benson, a clever sadist, decides to train Jamie, an young man, to reach a high level of awareness:
"I was preoccupied. I had made a transition that frightened me with its intensity. But it had happened. I had to face it. Most of the things that had happened up to that point were things that I had suffered because of my need for Mr. Benson. This was different. I knew I had become a masochist.
From that point on, sensations were sensations to me - simply and purely sensations. I could cross the boundary between pain and pleasure. And I owed it all to Mr. Benson.
I had the training down really well." (p. 78).

Totally got into this book. It kept me excited through the whole thing. The sexual tension in the book was riveting and completely kept my attention. Gave me a strong desire and example of what I would love to experience one day. I would without a doubt recommend this book.

Mr Benson

Mr Benson by John Preston was possibly one of the most challenging books I've read in a while, but the depth of feeling, trust and sense of belonging was so worth the ride. I have to agree with a comment made to me about the latter parts of the book, which did end up a little bit like something out of Five Go Mad in Dorset. However, by the time I'd actually reached this point in the book I did not really give a rats as I was up at some ungodly hour reading it. I just wanted to see what happened. I think the final chapter was what really set me on my ear. Mr Benson is not BDSM lite, it is the full banana and then some. One of my top reads of the year.
