I am a Ph.D. student working on my dissertation in case study research. This book is right on target for academic researchers using a case study approach. If you don't know anything about the process, you need this book. If you think you already know this process, you need this book.

Very useful and helpful

I recommend this book for anyone with zero or nearly zero knowledge about qualitative research and case study. Even though the majority of the examples are for education field, the generic explanation is very clear. The book guided me step by step by giving bit by bit necessary information regarding the topic.
This book is an exhibit of the author's experiences in the topic as well as her mastery of the story-telling flow without trapped in informal way of writing. The author did very well in explaning "new" terms, so that novice reader does not need to struggle to understand the qualitative research and case study research jargon.
However, there are some shallow discussions on some parts, like computer tools for data management. The author, however, provided an array of further reading materials to consult.
My advice is if you confused by any other books or any description about the topic, especially about the jargon, read this book. When you finish this book, and you return to read those other books, your earlier confusion will disappear.

Great Book- but needs better copyediting

This book offers an excellent overview of many aspects of psych assessment. It was very helpful in reviewing for quals- but watch out! There are several errors in this book! The specificity of a test is incorrectly explained, as is MMPI-2 TRIN interpretation. Some wierd formatting inconsistencies pop up in the Rorschach section... I don't recommend this book for 1st year grad students who are learning this material for the first time because they won't catch the errors and may learn things incorrectly.

Having read/reviewed numerous 'handbooks,' this is probably the best of the breed. Groth-Marnat has done an excellent job of covering the main assessment techniques used by clinicians to psychologically evaluate patients. Clinicians will find this handbook indispensable, and, in fact, (I predict) will keep it parked on their desk for ready access. Students will find the book thorough, informative and practical. If you are serious about psychological assessment, this one is a 'must-have.' You won't be disappointed.

About the Author

John Kenkel is a chemistry instructor at Southeast Community College (SCC) in Lincoln, Nebraska. Throughout his 33-year career at SCC, he has been directly involved in the education of chemistry-based laboratory technicians in a vocational program presently named Laboratory Science Technology. He has also been heavily involved in chemistry-based laboratory technician education on a national scale, having served on a number of American Chemical Society (ACS) committees, including the Committee on Technician Activities and the Coordinating Committee for the Voluntary Industry Standards project. Kenkel has been the Principal Investigator for a series of curriculum development project grants funded by the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education Program, from which three of his seven books evolved.
