Great book - Part education, part inspiration

Steve is a friend, and I was glad to receive a copy of his book to read and review. I wasn’t sure what to expect as far as the content of this book, but I knew it would be an engaging read as is everything Steve writes. This book is part education and part inspiration - it is an excellent peek inside Steve’s brain… how he thinks and views the world, how he approaches and works with people, and why he does what he does.

As you can guess from the title, the main body of the book is dedicated to a fairly in-depth explanation of the four main personality types (mad, glad, sad, scared) – how these types think and approach life, and how they relate to others. Anyone who reads this book will find themselves identifying with portions of these people type descriptions. The book also covers a brief history of the field of behavioral psychology, an overview of the most common tools profilers use to assess people (DISC, Meyers-Briggs, shapes, animals, etc.), and some common applications of these assessments for the workplace, personal relationships, and even parenting.

Besides the educational content, the main purpose of this book is to help people know themselves so that they may become free to be themselves. This is where Steve’s heart for people shines. There is no judgment here… just revelation and encouragement. We all know how easy it is to get caught up in comparing ourselves to others, and to thinking we need to perform to some standard to be accepted. Steve calls out these destructive, limiting patterns of thinking, and urges us on to freedom. Be free to be yourself. Be real.

Steven Sisler understands people.

From the importance and benefits of reading people to explaining the three fundamental avenues by which we all communicate (words, gestures and spirit), eventually leading us through the basics of DISC theory and a deep understanding of the four people types, Sisler's book is a masterclass in understanding the difference between personality types. This book will help you communicate and engage better with others and, maybe most important of all, give you a better awareness of yourself and your personality type.

Once in a while, I mark books as "read again once a year". This is that kind of book.

MUST READ if you want to Understand PEOPLE!

I've just got to say if you want to understand people and why they do what they do then you have got to read this book! I've actually read steves other books and followed his teaching for a while now. My personal and business relationships ARE AMAZING after having experienced the POWER of Steve Sislers knowledge and wisdom. One relationship specifically is my relationship with my fiance! Like most relationships there were things that each of us did that irritated the other person. But after being equipped with the knowledge that this book provides I now had a MUCH GREATER understanding of how to deal with the situations that were causing us problems. I know why she does what she does and how to deal with it and I know why I do what I do! The other thing that has been huge is my ability to have more patience with people who are different from me. Ever since I became obsessed with learning about myself and my personality my business has exploded because once you understand how you are wired you can do just about anything because you are no longer running into the HUGE amounts of resistance that you were more then likely running into when you don't understand yourself or others. I really believe that everyone should take the time to learn about themselves and others and this book is a PHENOMENAL GUIDE to understanding your own personality and that of others. You will find great stories and great inspiration in this book. Enjoy!

This was an excellent presentation of Albert Pike the man. His humor, his lifestyle, his friends, all give a more thorough understanding of someone who laid the foundation of the Scottish Rite. Agood read.

Delightfully readable

Scottish Rite Masons, Civil War buffs, historians, and the curious alike will enjoy this readable book. At first I was concerned that a tale about Mr. Pike would be a tough read full of lofty verbiage and abstract concepts, but this narrative is well presented and full of anectdotes which bring Brother Pike to life as a real man, practical jokes and all. The author stays focused on the humanity of Pike and his contributions without going off on "scholarly" tangents about Pike's sister's neighbor's dog, and keeping the book to a manageable size. A well done biography.

One of the most important works in religious studies in recent memory

Daniel Barber's "On Diaspora" is a stunning achievement. In a few short chapters, he completely overturns the common understanding of religion and its relationship to secularism by showing the Christian ancestry of both concepts -- and the ways that contemporary secularism repeats the pattern of Christian supercessionism. Throughout, he relies on a "preferential option" for Jewish sources such as Spinoza, Boyarin, and Taubes (and for non-supercessionistic voices in the Christian tradition, most notably John Howard Yoder). As he shakes up our preconceptions about the concept of religion, he also manages to shed new light on Jesus, Paul, and the relationship between them.

In short, this book is sure to be a major point of reference for any serious student of religion for decades to come.

This book got inside me.

In many ways, this is a book with which I have not yet come to terms, and it seems silly to attempt to review it now. But I think the fact that, months after reading it, the problem to which Barber attends still turns over and over in my head is in itself highly significant.

I've been, for as long as I've been studying theology, highly enamored with the so-called "apocalyptic" theologians (cf. Nate Kerr's Christ, History and Apocalyptic: The Politics of Christian Mission (Theopolitical Visions) for a paradigmatic example). Especially in a theological/philosophical world that seemed dominated by Thomism on the one hand and a supercessionist secularity on the other, apocalyptic seemed like the only game in town so to speak. After this book, however, I'm not sure I can continue going about my own work the same way. Old ways of thinking no longer lead where they once did, and what "worked" seems no longer to work. That's about the highest praise I know how to give any work of writing.

Great book - two editions - one typo

This is a terrific book for those wanting to master a basic French vocabulary. The tableaux are interesting and humorous, turning bits and pieces of everyday childhood scenes into indelible events. It is appropriate for all ages even though its format makes it appear as a children's book. For really young children, a much simplier text, such as those in the series "My First Bilingual Book," would be more appropriate. Also for younger readers are texts such as "My First French Book."

There are two editions of "First Thousand Words in French"; hardcover and paper. The hardcover sells for a few dollars more than the paper. It appears that the hardcover has been withdrawn from sales and is available only on the secondary market. In any event, only the paperback appears to be available as new from Amazon at present. I have both versions but I prefer the hardcover for the simple reason that the pages fold out completely flat, whereas the pages of the paperback do not (an annoyance). The hardcover is also very nicely bound; it will last until the next Ice Age. Were I to buy another copy of this book, I would purchase it "new" from the secondary market. You can buy a completely new hardcover (or slightly used copy, if you prefer) by clicking on the button "See all buying options." The few extra dollars the hardcover costs is worth it, in my opinion.

The pronunciation guide found on the Internet is available without any passwords or other proof of purchase being necessary. It is well organized, by topic and page number. The French pronunciation is by a native French speaker, distinct and crystal-clear.

If you wish a new edition on the secondary market, you need to order specifically from the following site on Amazon: "First Thousand Words in French: With Internet-Linked Pronunciation Guide (Hardcover)". There are a number of different offerings from Amazon for this text. For the secondary market, be sure you get the exact site mentioned in the previous sentence.

There is one typo. On page 7, the washing machine was translated as "le lava-linge" in the hardcover. The correct word is "le lave-linge". The misprint appears only in the hardcover; the publisher corrected the error in the paperback edition.

My second book in this series ~

This was my second "First Thousand Words" book, the other being Japanese. They are similar as far as the drawings, but the words are different of course.

Here is what I like about the book: There are no English translations on the main pages. There is a list of the English words and French words in the glossary, but on each page with the picture, the French word is listed under the individual picture of the object. This is great because it makes your brain link the actual object to the French word, not to an English word for the object. You see an apple and you think "pomme!" instead of looking at the apple, seeing "apple" and then translating "pomme". It is the method used by Rosetta Stone.

These 1000 words are good, everyday words. You learn everything from animals to colors, relatives to actions, airports to homes. The words are useful, and they are good for building vocabulary. Of course there are not conjugations (for verbs or adjectives), but often the male and female words are listed in those instances where both are applicable.

It's a great little resource that I like to peek through every now and again. Worth buying used for sure.

Taha an extraordinary renovator of Islamic thinking

This is an excellent, well written, and well document book about a leading though largely ignored in the West, modern Arab thinker in Islam. The book's title captures Mahmoud Taha's quest for the absolute. Though his writings reflect a high level of thought it nonetheless is firmly rooted in everyday's reality. His balance between mystic and pragmatic an political thought makes him unique among modern thinkers.

The author, M. Mahmoud has dug very deep in Taha's writings and provides a critical balance between an account of such thinking and an evaluation of Taha's thought. His vast knowledge of Islamic thought is a major asset in tracing back the various influences that have affected or impacted Taha's thought.

I believe this book is a must to have and read for anyone interested in the lively debates in modern Islamic thought.

Peter Jones was educated at Cambridge University and taught Classics at Cambridge and at Newcastle University, before retiring in 1997. He has written a regular column, "Ancient & Modern", in the Spectator for many years and is the author of various books on the Classics, including the bestselling Learn Latin and Learn Ancient Greek, as well as Reading Virgil's Aeneid I and II, Vote for Caesar, and Veni, Vidi, Vici.

Just as the artists of the optical unconscious assaulted the idea of autonomy and visual mastery, Rosalind Krauss abandons the historian's voice of objective detachment and forges a new style of writing in this book: art history that insinuates diary and art theory, and that has the gait and tone of fiction.

The Optical Unconscious will be deeply vexing to modernism's standard-bearers, and to readers who have accepted the foundational principles on which their aesthetic is based. Krauss also gives us the story that Alfred Barr, Meyer Shapiro, and Clement Greenberg repressed, the story of a small, disparate group of artists who defied modernism's most cherished self-descriptions, giving rise to an unruly, disruptive force that persistently haunted the field of modernism from the 1920s to the 1950s and continues to disrupt it today.

In order to understand why modernism had to repress the optical unconscious, Krauss eavesdrops on Roger Fry in the salons of Bloomsbury, and spies on the toddler John Ruskin as he amuses himself with the patterns of a rug; we find her in the living room of Clement Greenberg as he complains about "smart Jewish girls with their typewriters" in the 1960s, and in colloquy with Michael Fried about Frank Stella's love of baseball. Along the way, there are also narrative encounters with Freud, Jacques Lacan, Georges Bataille, Roger Caillois, Gilles Deleuze, and Jean-Fran�ois Lyotard.

To embody this optical unconscious, Krauss turns to the pages of Max Ernst's collage novels, to Marcel Duchamp's hypnotic Rotoreliefs, to Eva Hesse's luminous sculptures, and to Cy Twombly's, Andy Warhol's, and Robert Morris's scandalous decoding of Jackson Pollock's drip pictures as "Anti-Form." These artists introduced a new set of values into the field of twentieth-century art, offering ready-made images of obsessional fantasy in place of modernism's intentionality and unexamined compulsions.

Rosalind E. Krauss is University Professor in the Department of Art History at Columbia University, where, from 1995 to 2006, she held the Meyer Schapiro Chair in Modern Art and Theory. She is a founding editor of October and the author of Passages in Modern Sculpture, The Originality of the Avant-Garde and Other Myths, The Optical Unconscious, Bachelors, Perpetual Inventory, Under Blue Cup (all published by the MIT Press), and other books.

unconfortable platform to contemporary culture

Through a carefully structured narrative agenda, Rosalind Krauss is able to foreshadow, a compromised and descriptive text, about the contemporary use of the word "understand", specially if applied to the modernist arts and its criticism. Greatly to the advantage of us, lesser audiences, every thesis is exhibited with both academic rigor and narrative richness, permiting thus, the emergence of rich and useful images, powerful to illustrate, vinculate, even sometimes explain, many of the contemporary works of other theorists, that come to the text sometimes to expose, sometimes to poison, the general arguments around modernist production and the understanding of arts. Great for abbandoning oneself into insomnia, it is common to find provocative images, greatly to the advantage of self-involment in the arguments, and to the further underdstanding of the actual state of simbolical exchange, in the present tense. The involment in contemporary thought and debate, and the well constructed historical narrative, provides the text with an surprisingly effective mirror to look at our culture at an compromisingly close viewpoint, in wich many constitutive arguments of contemporary culture today are reflected just as the many of the historical lies that are still at use now at the "explaining" of the artistic pulsions, and its assimilation by the artistic institutions.

Can you see the watcher?

Kraus's "The Optical Unconcious" is a good companion, as it were, to Martin Jay's "Downcast Eyes." Both discuss the dilema of visuality in Modernist thought and then -whoa - bring out post-modernism just by speaking about the eye and seeing. While Jay gets technical with his notion of "occular centrism," Kraus lets us feel what it means to watch or be watched. Her approach to the male gaze, the fashionable term for good old fashioned voyerism, is that it is natural. Sure, it one can analyse it as a by product of the failure of the industrial revolution to liberate people from work and to bring about more leisure time for the masses (by implication create greater equality - fewer people watching each other in the negative sense). Krauss is right when she insists that looking is a normal, natural occurance in contemporary society. She is also on target about the obsession Americans have with time, and that sight is the quickest method of human understanding. A great book!
