The Guard, by Peter Terrin, David Colmer

Winner of the European Union Literature Prize, Peter Terrin's The Guard is a haunting novel of perceived oppression by the an omnipresent, but unknown, authority.

In the near future, Harry and Michel live in the basement of a luxury apartment block, guarding the inhabitants. No one goes outside. The world might be at war, it might even have been plunged into nuclear winter. No one knows.

But one weekend, all of the residents leave the block, one by one. All but the man on floor 29. Harry and Michel stick to their posts. All they know, all they can hope for, is that if they are vigilant, the "Organization" will reward them with a promotion to an elite cadre of security officers. But what if there were no one left to guard?

Playing on our darkest fears, The Guard is a tautly observed novel by a writer of striking and stylish originality.

Review
"The Guard is a novel that leaves you astonished with its beauty and completeness."―NRC Handelsblad

"The Guard is a sublime book... a brilliantly told story."―Karin Overmars, Het Parool

"The Guard is so good, its world so minutely described and Michel so undeniably compelling that to suggest anything other than to pick this up and read it immediately would be to do it a disservice."―SciFi Now

"A mix of psychological thriller and SF fable, this strange, wonderfully claustrophobic novel."―John O'Connell, The Guardian

"A rich and gripping mix of all the ingredients that make for a truly haunting atmosphere."―Valeria Melchioretto, Writers' Hub

??There's a cold and beautiful precision to Peter Terrin's writing, and a remorselessness and finally terrifying accretion of detail that begins by seeming fussy and ends by being unsettling."―SFX

"Terrin tells a strongly allegorical story of 21st-century society, which holds the reader under its spell... The Guard is not only an enthralling psychological novel, it is also a love story, one which encompasses oppressiveness, emotion and explicit sensuality."―from the European Union Literature Prize citation

"Terrin wastes no time sucking the audience into the narrative... you simply won't want to put the book down until you find out exactly what's going on."―Joe Royce, Starburst Magazine

"Terrin's wonderfully sinister, darkly funny novel owes more to this genre than to simple SF. Guards Harry and narrator Michel keep watch in a tower block basement as the 'New War' empties the city. Many twists ensue. Finely translated (from Dutch) by David Colmer, the deadpan, exact, discomfiting prose keeps an icy grip."―Boyd Tonkin, The Independent

"This is a tremendous novel, often horrifically funny and always unsettling. Most emphatically, though, it is a European novel, articulating the cultural situation of a Flanders-born writer looking to Dutch literature while retaining a powerful awareness of Belgium's surrealist traditions."―Eileen Battersby, The Irish Times

"Webs of Pinteresque paranoia... Effectively horrid."―David Langford, The Sunday Telegraph

"Terrin has enriched Flemish literature with a clever novel about modern, yet simultaneously universal, paranoia that ends in a perfect psychological pas de deux."―De Morgen

"wryly funny"―Booklist

"Science fiction meets Samuel Beckett in this Godot-like tale . . . a disarming allegory for the conflict-ridden, anxiety-producing times we live in."

―Kirkus Reviews

"Chillingly claustrophobic and ominous . . . what develops into the existential love story between Michel and Harry, the postmodern grandkids of Vladimir and Estragon (if not Stan and Ollie), gains a genuine poignancy."―Locus

About the Author
Flemish novellist Peter Terrin has been described as "a master of ominous detail" and is considered by critics to be a literary maverick, a classic writer who doesn't follow trends, and a masterful stylist. He has also written for the theatre and is active as a columnist. Terrin was the recipient of the European Union Literature prize and has been nominated for major literary awards several times, including the AKO Literature, Libris Literature, and the West Flanders Prizes for Literature.

Good start but spoilt (for me) by enigmatic last third
By Dr John Albiston
****PLOT SPOILERS****
Sad to say I didn't enjoy the book. It started well- an interesting exercise in minimalist story telling. At times it it reminded me of Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot' and J G Ballard's 'Highrise' but I never felt it went anywhere. The beginning had me gripped with it's attention to small detail and the way small matters of routine became inflated in importance with repetition. But I can't say I really understood the last 1/3. I would love someone to explain it to me- was he dead? Was he alone the whole time? What was real? What was imaginary? Shades of Golding's 'Pincher Martin' again- so many of these types of enigmatic storylines remind me of that book that I was made to read at school.

I'm totally non-plussed by it winning some European lit award...
It reinforces my wariness of any book that is described as "a modern day fable..."

Decent story loses its way and becomes too confusing in the final act.
By Dr.Gonzo
I love post-apocalyptic fiction. I am a fan of the theater of the absurd like Waiting for Godot. I thought I would love this book. Turns out I didn't really care for it.

The first act was well done and sets the stage. Act II steers the story in a darker direction. My problem came with act III. Act III was weird and confusing and I didn't enjoy it at all. It left my with an overall negative impression of the story. I don't need a hollywood ending to my books but I expected something more than I got from this book and it felt like the author cheated me after I had invested my time in reading his story.

50 pages too many.
By monica
Harry and Michael are security guards working and living in the parking level of an apartment building the tenants have all deserted. Indeed the entire neighbourhood--perhaps the whole city--may have been abandoned. The two have no way of knowing, because apart from a fellow worker who delivers supplies at erratic intervals no one has entered or left the building for what seems a long time.

The Guard is atmospheric, for the most part well-plotted, and written well. The story is presented as a series of vignettes in very short chapters, and the organisation of these and the transitions between them are done with skill. And that the author fails to give answers to the questions a reader will have is for me quite satisfying; one never learns why the guards are treated as they are by their employer, what has happened in the outside world (Terrin might offer a clue on occasion, though I'm not even sure of that), and what will happen after the book's end.

The Guard is divided into three sections. The first section is all but spellbinding and the third one is. The second, which is perhaps one-fifth of the book, feels much longer than that and falls flat. In it a new element is introduced into the story and we learn more about Harry. This part of the book is predictable--anyone who's seen a few Hollywood films knows the outcome--and repetitious: the change in Harry is hammered home in several similar passages. Despite the drama it contains, Part 2 simply isn't very interesting, and I wasn't altogether certain as I read it that I'd bother to finish the book. It isn't that the story suddenly becomes a bad one but it is for a while a rather boring one. Perhaps it's because all that occurs in that section is more clear-cut, nearly heavy-handedly so, and that the atmosphere and mystery are because of that dissipated.

I shall almost certainly re-read this and if I do I hope that I'll then find Part 2 not to be the sticking-point it was first time 'round.

Great Product
By E. Claire
I NEVER take time to write a review for products... Just don't have time. But this kit is so good, was such a hit with my 9 year-old daughter (and me--tons of fun to do together), that I felt compelled to sing its praises. The kit contains pretty beads, a clear, well-written instructional booklet with bright, beautiful, inspiring pictures, and a sturdy loom. My daughter needs a little help stringing the loom and finishing the bracelets, but that hasn't stopped her from making a bracelet a day since Christmas...This is a well-priced, well designed product.

My goal with this book is to give you the next best thing: some sense of what it’s like to meet a drawing expert and to have a series of lessons at his or her side. There’s no shortage of instructional art books in the world; I’ve made a few of them myself. But I wanted to see if crucial lessons about drawing could be woven into an actual narrative. So, I set out to create a story that would give you vicariously the experience of having a mentor—one that can make you feel as if you are the one having your mistakes corrected, as if you are being told what to do and how to do it.

So, please turn the page, meet young David, and follow him on his drawing journey. I hope his story gives you some sense of what it’s like to have a drawing mentor. Mentors are not always gentle, and they certainly aren’t there just to be your personal cheerleader. But a mentor can truly change the way you see the world, and in so doing change your life altogether.

I've never heard of Mark Crilley before, never read any of his books, and I have a feeling I'm not his usual target demographic (since he's well-known for his manga books and I'm not a manga fan), but wow, this was a wonderful book.

Its purpose, according to the book's notes, is to allow you to experience what it's like to have a mentor--someone who will not only teach you how to draw, but interact with you, point out what you're doing wrong, and to encourage you (but not coddle you). This book delivers that, in an abbreviated form.

The story is of a boy, David, who meets a woman in the park who is drawing. He begs her to teach him, and she does, for a few hours. But of course, the lesson doesn't end there! Each chapter shows how David and his mentor meet up, and each chapter shows her teaching him a new drawing principle. First, it's getting the outline of the drawing accurate. There's a chapter on shading. Then there's the one about using your pencil strokes to follow along the form. (I enjoyed that one. Finally, a beginner drawing book that doesn't rely on smearing the graphite! Eureka! Glory be!) Negative space is covered, composition--it's a really good book!

I'd recommend it to anyone, of any age. I wouldn't assume that it would be the only drawing book that would ever be needed. It can't possibly cover everything. But it does offer a good start, plus it teaches some truths that beginner artists need to learn, but are things that are often beyond the scope of regular beginner drawing books. Things like wanting to draw for its own sake (not to compete with someone else), and to accept criticism and keep on moving forward.

This is a wonderful book and beautifully presented. I think it would be a big hit with anyone, but particularly those under age 18, especially if they've just discovered drawing.

If this doesn't lead Mark Crilley to his Eisner, I don't know what will!!
By Thomas J. Mohr
Believe it or not, I could've been the first person to review this! But I wouldn't have gotten it in the mail and it would've been dishonest, so now that I've finished reading it, (a few minutes ago actually,) I'll share with the internet my thoughts on this masterpiece.

The sketchy art style is superb. With it's cartoony characters and semi-realistic backgrounds, it's almost as if he's returned to his Akiko roots, while at the same time he makes it seem as if the world around the characters is a sketch itself. The thinly laced plot is solid as a rock and the characters are very believable. From the eager student David, (named after his real life art instructor, David Small,) to his art instructor Becky, who seems to teach him about drawing just to get him to stop bugging her.

As a young student artist, it calls to mind MY drawing lessons I've had with my first art instructor a few years ago, (and him telling me to make my lines darker among other things.) I've had many of the same problems with my art as David does in this book, (and still do,) so that makes the young protagonist far more compelling to me than, say, Miki Yoshida from Miki Falls. Becky's drawing lessons are very practical and very similar to how my art instructor taught me, (though I don't remember him telling me about Negative Space,) and her instructions don't feel like she's talking down to you, unlike SOME instructional comics I've read.

Ever since I picked up that copy of Mastering Manga over a Christopher Hart book so long ago, I feel like I've learned everything about drawing comics from this master of the comics medium, (and from my art instructor of course!) All in all, if this masterpiece doesn't win him his Eisner Award, (or at least fourteenth nomination,) I don't know what will!

A must buy!!!!
By Julia L. Anderson
Well, I pre-ordered this book and it arrived yesterday. I think if Mr Crilley met me he would be VERY surprised to find an older beginner artist bought this book! This book is amazing, and it's a whole teaching manual, with a story line that's interesting ! I highly recommend this book to new and intermediate artists..... You will love it! Thanks Mark Crilley !

Owen - Book One of the Tudor Trilogy, by Tony Riches

England 1422: Owen Tudor, a Welsh servant, waits in Windsor Castle to meet his new mistress, the beautiful and lonely Queen Catherine of Valois, widow of the warrior king, Henry V. Her infant son is crowned King of England and France, and while the country simmers on the brink of civil war, Owen becomes her protector.

They fall in love, risking Owen’s life and Queen Catherine’s reputation—but how do they found the dynasty which changes British history – the Tudors?

This is the first historical novel to fully explore the amazing life of Owen Tudor, grandfather of King Henry VII and the great-grandfather of King Henry VIII. Set against a background of the conflict between the Houses of Lancaster and York, which develops into what have become known as the Wars of the Roses, Owen’s story deserves to be told.

Owen - Book One of the Tudor Trilogy is a new addition to story of the Tudors in the historical fiction tradition of C J Sansom, Conn Iggulden, Philippa Gregory and Hilary Mantel.

Intelligent historical read
By AlisonW
I love a good, intelligent historical novel. There are so many out there, and I have to be honest and say that, on many occasions, I have bought a promising looking book, only to abandon it within the first few chapters. Very often, the detail won't be right, or the characters will behave in a way that just isn't realistic for the time. One of the main issues though is that the dialogue can be so hard to get right. I've read so many historical novels where the characters use words that just wouldn't have been around in the period in which they are set, or, alternatively, where the writer is so keen to make the dialogue authentic that they overdo it and render the book unreadable.
I'm pleased to say that neither of those things were issues in this book. The historical detail was rich and informative. I felt as though I learned a great deal about this particular period of history while immersed completely in Owen's story. And the language was spot on too. Nothing felt out of place.
The story is fascinating. Owen Tudor, a Welsh servant, falls in love with Queen Catherine of Valois, the widow of King Henry V. I had never heard of Owen, and knew nothing of his remarkable story. Their romance, and the dangers it brings, is played out against the background of the conflicts, intrigues and betrayals of the time that led to the War of the Roses.
Riches certainly knows his subject. There was so much detail here. The reader is carried from Windsor, to Wales, to France, into battles and life at court, with rich detail at every turn.
I felt though, that there was so much detail here, so much going on, that Owen's own story was a little lost at times - in terms of his emotions and feelings. I didn't always feel connected to him, even though the novel is written in first person. It felt sometimes as though he was dashing from one event to another without pause for breath. When tragedy struck, I didn't always feel that Owen's feelings came across.
The novel is written in present tense which was a bit off-putting for me. While present tense can bring immediacy to a story, I do think this would have worked better in past tense. Having said that, the writing was solid.
I do recommend this to those who enjoy historical novels. It's a thoughtful, intelligent book that doesn't disappoint.

Excellent book of early Tudors.
By K. Hacker
I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written book. I did enjoy the telling of the story in the first person. The story of Owen Tudor is so often just a side note in the telling of the War of the Roses and the Tudors. The fact that this man would marry the former Queen of England and the sister of the King of France is fascinating. Of interest to me is the mental illness by Catherine and her son Henry VI. Could this have caused the mercurial moods of Henry VII and Henry VIII? I am looking forward to the next books about Jasper and Henry VII.

The Servant who Married a Queen and Fathered a Royal Dynasty.
By Robin E. Levin
Catherine of Valois was a prize of war. After Henry V of England defeated the French in the famous battle of Agincourt, part of the peace settlement was that the daughter of the French King Charles VI would marry Henry. The marriage between the English King and the French princess was short-lived because he died of the flux in 1422, leaving Catherine with and infant son.
Owain ap Maredydd ap Tudur , whose name was anglicized to Owen Tudor, was the disenfranchised son of a Welsh nobleman. Having lost his patrimony, he became a soldier of fortune and fought with King Henry’s bowman in France. After Henry’s death he became a retainer in the dowager Queen’s household, the master of her wardrobe, charged, essentially with running the household.
The story is told from the point of view of Owen, who, despite a dalliance with the Queen’s maid Juliette, falls deeply in love with the Queen. Once the young Prince Henry is removed from the household to undertake his training for the Kingship, Catherine takes notice of the devoted Owen and begins to return his affection. They marry in secret and set up household in Much Hadam, a quiet village some forty miles north of London. They know that their marriage will not be approved by Sir Humphrey and Sir Beaufort, the advisors of the young King, and they endeavor to keep the marriage secret as long as possible. During the years of their marriage, Catherine gives birth to three sons, but she dies in childbirth after giving birth to a daughter. The baby dies after a week. By this time their marriage has been discovered by the Prince’s counselors and Owen is in big trouble.
After a stint in Newgate Prison, Owen is released thanks to the mercy of the young King. Eventually Owen’s sons, Edmund and Jasper become favorites of the King, who is, after all their half-brother. Edmund marries Margaret Beaufort and they give Owen a grandson, Henry. There is a cloud on the horizon as the Richard, the Duke of York is determined to wrest the throne of England from the feckless King, Henry VI. Owen’s sons attempt to reconcile the factions but are finally forced to support their half- brother the King in a bitter and prolonged civil war.
Tony Riches has written a fascinating account of a troubled period in English history and a sympathetic portrait of a romantic relationship between two people of very unequal rank which would spawn a dynasty.

Aztec and Maya Myths (Legendary Past), by Karl Taube

The myths of the Aztec and Maya derive from a shared Mesoamerican cultural tradition. This is very much a living tradition, and many of the motifs and gods mentioned in early sources are still evoked in the lore of contemporary Mexico and Guatemala.

Professor Taube discusses the different sources for Aztec and Maya myths. The Aztec empire began less than 200 years before the Spanish conquest, and our knowledge of their mythology derives primarily from native colonial documents and manuscripts commissioned by the Spanish. The Maya mythology is far older, and our knowledge of it comes mainly from native manuscripts of the Classic period, over 600 years before the Spanish conquest.

Drawing on these sources as well as nineteenth- and twentieth-century excavations and research, including the interpretation of the codices and the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing, the author discusses, among other things, the Popol Vuh myths of the Maya, the flood myth of Northern Yucatan, and the Aztec creation myths.

From the Back Cover
The myths of the ancient Aztec and Maya derive from a shared Mesoamerican cultural tradition which is still alive in the lore of contemporary Mexico and Central America. The Maya creation and flood myths have survived in various forms in pre-Hispanic writing and art, but the Aztec empire arose less than two centuries before the Spanish conquest and our knowledge of its mythology comes primarily from early colonial documents of the 16th century.

Dissapointing
By Zeveck
This book was not what I had expected. To start with, it is only 80 pages, and 30 pages are taken up discussing the research history from which our knowledge of Aztec and Mayan myths derive. The 50 pages of mythology offer only a broad overview of myths (broader even than the excellent World Mythology: An Anthology of Great Myths and Epics by Donna Rosenberg). That said, it does an okay job of tying the myths into the culture and has lots of apposite pictures.

Overall, however, I regret having purchases this book.

Are we not men? Are we not maize?
By A Customer
This is an excellent volume for introductory, background,
and inspired reading to do further research on the Aztec
and Mayan mythologies. Don't let the number of pages
fool you (80) -- there is a wealth of solid information
and well as excellent photographs and drawing reproductions
to inform, entrance, and entertain in this book.
The chapter titles are: Introduction; Major sources and
the History of Research; Aztec Mythology; Maya Mythology;
Mesoamerican Mythology. There is also a 2 page presentation
of Suggestions for Further Reading, which is very fine.
The Introduction, as well as the chapters, are subdivided
into helpfully labeled subsections. The Introduction's
subsections are: Ancient Mesoamerican History; Ancient
Mesoamerican religion (Calendrics; Day versus Night;
Twins; Role Models and Social Conduct). The chapter on
Aztec Mythology has the subsections: The Creation of
Heaven and Earth; The Restoration of the Sky and Earth;
The Origin of People; The Origin of Maize; The Origin
of Pulque ("an alcohoic beverage made from the fermented
sap of the maguey plant"); The Creation of the Fifth Sun;
Mythology of the Aztec State; The Birth of Huitzilopochtli.
The chapter on Maya Mythology has the subsections: The
-Popol Vuh-: Primordial Origins; The Hero Twins and the
Vanquishing of Xibalba; The Origin of Maize and People;
The -Popol Vuh- Creation Epic in Classic Maya Religion;
Maya Mythology of Yucatan; Yucatec Creation Mythology
and the Flood; Creation Mythology and Calendrics in
Yucatan.
The pictures and reproduction of drawings are incredible.
The cover picture for the book is of "The Maize God,
flanked by his sons Hunahpu and Xbalanque, emerging out
of the earth, represented as a split turtle shell."
On page 6 there is a very good map of Mexico and the
Mesoamerican region with the Aztec and Maya sites
located. Some of the other provocative pictures are of
A Mesoamerican Model of Time and Space, The Venus god
Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli attacking a watery mountain,
Mosaic sacrificial knife (Aztec), God 9 Wind (Mixtec),
Tezcatlipoca deity impersonator to be sacrificed during
the twenty-day month of Toxcatl, The Destruction of the Sun
of Wind and the Transformation of Humans into Monkeys, the
Aztec Calendar Stone, and many others.
An excerpt or two: "The rain god Tlaloc rules over the
third creation, the sun of rain. This world is destroyed
by Quetzalcoatl in a rain of fire -- probably volcanic ash,
a relatively common geological occurrence in central
Mexico. The fiery rain magically transforms the people of
this race into turkeys [! -- from "Aztec Mythology"]."
"Mesoamerican myths are more than sacred accounts of the
origins of the world; they also contain profound lessons
for proper behaviour. Among the most commonly mentioned
vices to bring disaster and defeat are arrogance and
greed." (--from "Introduction: Role Models and Social
Conduct.")
-- Robert Kilgore.

A good introduction
By Rafael Khn
As always, Karl Taube provides good value with a book about Mesoamerican mythology written specifically for the beginner. He starts by illustrating the various sources from which these stories have come down to us, and then recites Maya and Aztec beliefs (mainly concerning Creation) in a fluent and enjoyable way. He doesn't go into the details as much as one could wish, and makes little mention of secondary myths which aren't yet completely understood, but - especially as far as the Aztec part is concerned - he does a fine job of hooking the reader onto the spiritual worlds of cultures that have rarely found their equal in both comlexity and richness of meaning. Buy and get excited.

Autobiography of Mark Twain, Vol. 3, by Mark Twain

The surprising final chapter of a great American life

When the first volume of Mark Twain's uncensored autobiography was published in 2010, it was hailed as an essential addition to the shelf of his works and a crucial document for our understanding of the great humorist's life and times. This third and final volume crowns and completes his life's work. Like its companion volumes, it chronicles Twain's inner and outer life through a series of daily dictations that go wherever his fancy leads.

Created from March 1907 to December 1909, these dictations present Mark Twain at the end of his life: receiving an honorary degree from Oxford University; railing against Theodore Roosevelt, founding numerous clubs; incredulous at an exhibition of the Holy Grail; credulous about the authorship of Shakespeare's plays; relaxing in Bermuda; observing (and investing in) new technologies. The autobiography's "Closing Words" movingly commemorate his daughter, Jean, who died on Christmas Eve 1909. Also included in this volume is the previously unpublished "Ashcroft-Lyon Manuscript", Mark Twain's caustic indictment of his "putrescent pair" of secretaries and the havoc that erupted in his house during their residency.

Fitfully published in fragments at intervals throughout the 20th century, Autobiography of Mark Twain has now been critically reconstructed and made available as it was intended to be read. Fully annotated by the editors of the Mark Twain Project, the complete autobiography emerges as a landmark publication in American literature.

A fitting work for a uniquely American writer
By Glynn Young
It’s an odd work, this autobiography Mark Twain undertook in the last few years of his life. And the third and final volume published by the University of California Press only compounds the oddity.

First, and most obvious, it is anything but a chronological account of Twain’s life. To be fair, Twain repeatedly says he is not writing the standard autobiography. He’s writing what he might call a more personally pleasurable account – some recounting of his life, observations about current events that may or may not have anything to do with his life, the inclusion of stories he likes to tell and ones told by others that he liked, notes of daily household activities, wholesale inclusion of his speeches, and occasional frank (often brutal) observations of some of his contemporaries and friends, coupled with an admonition that this wasn’t to be published until sometime well after his death.

Second, it resembles not so much an autobiography as it does one of Twain’s public speeches or performances. He wanders and meanders; he surprises; he takes you down a rabbit hole that may or may not have a point or a connection to a larger story, but the hole is always entertaining. He wanders in his memories of a lifetime, and issues and personalities of the time in which he is dictating this story (roughly 1906-1909).

Third is the ending. Long before he covers even the major events of his life, he suddenly announces on Christmas Eve 1909 that the autobiography is finished; he is done, And the reason is poignant. His adult daughter Jean, who had suffered from epilepsy, dies in 1909. His sole surviving child Clara has married, and his reason for the autobiography – to provide for his two remaining children – has disappeared.

But what stories he tells in the process!

Twain had announced he was finished with international travel. Then he receives a letter from Oxford University in 1907, saying he is to receive an honorary degree. He throws his decision not to travel out the window and hastens to England.

The day before he receives the degree (along with such other luminaries as Rudyard Kipling, Auguste Rodin and Camille Saint-Saens), he gives a speech in London, where he characteristically notes what the newspaper placards are proclaiming: “Mark Twain Arrives, Ascot Cup Stolen.” Tongue-in-cheek, he denies there’s any connection – and brings down the house in laughter. While he’s in England, he attends a garden party hosted by King Edward VII at Windsor Castle – the small-town boy from Hannibal, Missouri, has come a long way, indeed.

He also recalls being in New York City in 1867 (I warned you the account wasn’t chronological) to visit with a former shipmate aboard the Quaker City when he traveled to the Mideast to write stories for a newspaper. The friend brings his sister with him, and together they attend a reading by Charles Dickens – the account of Steerforth’s death in David Copperfield. While the reading was dramatic (Dickens was famous for his overwhelming readings), Twain has nothing but the fondest memories – because the friend’s sister was Olivia Langdon, who would become his beloved wife of 34 years until her death in 1904.

He notes meetings with well-known politicians and industrialists like Andrew Carnegie and the deaths of close friends like Joel Chandler Harris. He seems to be dictating with a sense of inevitability; he is reaching the end of his life although Twain himself likely didn’t know how close it was, just a few months after his daughter Jean, on April 21, 1910.

Toward the end of this third volume, when he is closing down the work, he includes this line: “Night is closing down; the rim of the sun barely shows above the sky line of the hills.” It is a fitting sentiment for this uniquely American writer.

Excellent Publication, but use two bookmarks
By A customer
I have read all three volumes of Mark Twain’s autobiography and, while it was a monumental task, it was incredibly enjoyable. It really was like getting to sit and listen to the man talk. He is extremely sharp and funny. His descriptive abilities are unsurpassed. Since he knew this would not be published until a century after his death, he was not censored in his opinions. He is acerbic and funny and, I’m sure if we actually knew the people he talks about, dead on accurate. His comments about Theodore Roosevelt are hilarious. Twain’s self-awareness of his own ego and foibles also provides many humorous observations and comments.

Because it’s such a long autobiography, I’m sure the editors had a difficult time deciding when to end each volume. Volume One ends with a better sense of narrative completion than Volume Two, which ends on a more random note (I read each of these as they were published) Now that all three volumes are available, new readers won’t have to deal with the feeling of being left hanging. My only quibble with Volume Three is that I wish the Ashcroft-Lyon Papers had been inserted into the autobiography to correspond with the time they were written. As I was reading, I had wondered why there was such a huge gap in diary entries during the summer of 1909, which is explained in the introduction to the A-L Papers. I also wished that Twain’s final words were of his daughter Jean, rather than Ashcroft and Lyon. It’s a minor thing, but I thought I’d mention it.

I can’t understand the complaints from other reviewers that the writing was too long or too rambling. (stay away from Dickens!) Twain says at the very beginning that he isn’t going to do a “normal” autobiography. This is not a book to be read from cover to cover in one or two sittings. I read this book while reading other books over the course of several months. I would read two to four entries at a time and absorb what he said. I really got a feel of that era and I enjoyed the history as much as Twain’s own words. The reason why I say the reader should use two bookmarks is this: I kept one bookmark at Twain’s entries and the other bookmark at the descriptive notes in the back. I’d read one entry and then immediately read the corresponding notes. This gave me a better feel for the subject and who people were. It really enriched the reading experience.

I’m extremely impressed with the hard work that went into publishing these volumes and they do not disappoint. If you’re a fan of Mark Twain these books are totally worth it.

A decidedly mixed bag
By Michael A. Willhoite
This morning I finished reading the third and last volume of this magisterial autobiography, having read the first two over the last two years. This one ends sadly, with his barely bearable grief over losing a second daughter, Jean. I was shocked to realize that at the end only 38% of the space on my Kindle had been read. But there was more. For hours I read a long, appended screed concerning his former employees Ralph Ashcroft and Isabel Lyons. There were flashes of the old Twain wit on every page, but mostly it was unsettling to read his anger, his talent wasted on such a disturbing episode in his life. But altogether, I luxuriated in these three volumes. Twain was a titan, always transcendently readable. Reading on a Kindle made reading these three mountainous books so much easier than hefting the individual volumes. Bravo to Amazon for this.

The Spirit of Public Administration, by H. George Frederickson

In this field-defining, broad approach to the study and practice of public administration, H. George Frederickson, one of the field's most respected scolars, carefully measures the meets and bounds of public administration and fixes its place in the context of changing politics, values, and ethics. He describes a robust and exciting public administration that includes, but is much more than, effective government management. The Spirit of Public Administration defines an ethic for the field that illustrates:
* What the differences are between public administration and government administration, and how these differences redefine the field
* How to practice ethical and energetic public administration in the context of contemporary politics
* Why fairness and benevolence are as important as efficiency and economy
* What implications are evident in the transition from government to governance
Frederickson strongly defAnds broad grants of discretion to public administrators and then lays out the proper norms and ethic which should inform that discretion. And he firmly argues that the effectiveness of democratic government and modern governance, not just for the majority of but for all citizens, depAnds on the energetic exercise of bureaucratic discretion. The book concludes with seven principles that should guide everyone who works in public settings. Students and scholars will find The Spirit of Public Administration an exhilarating and challenging perspective.

Lynn, Jr., professor, Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies, University of Chicago

By bringing together his insights on these topics, this book provides a very valuable resource for the field." --Hal G. Rainey, professor, Department of Political Science, University of Georgia

"This book, by one of the field's masters, explores the very heart and soul of public administration. Its conclusions sketch a fresh, new approach, grounded in public interest, that the field greatly needs to rediscover." --Donald F. Kettl, professor, Robert M. The Doom of Public Under High-Pressure Business Rhetoric
By TD
Management is management everywhere, in public or private organization, but the principles you must be loyal to, the context you are faced with, and certainly means to be used depend on the setting, where you are in. So far, much was written about creating high-performance government organizations by making public organizations much more like business, that is, it was thought to apply business- oriented models to government organizations. This process gained the moment with the splendid study, reinventing government, of Osborne and Gaebler,. Following this book, lots of book took the turn to advance the reinventing voice and as time passed, incredible propositions were presented in order to transform public sector into a new structure similar to that of profit sector.
This book is an investigation on the spirit of public administration. Professor Frederickson tries to persuade readers about why public administration should be thought of and approached to differently. The relationship of public administration with democratic principles is told in the book. In classic public administration theory, much emphasis was given to efficiency, economy and effectiveness and these performance guides were accepted as surrogates to evaluate how much public organizations are successful. Given this, public administrators were assigned the role to implement policy decisions, imposed by elected officials, with the maximum efficiency and economy. Author tells that these are important, but not sufficient, and another third surrogate -EQUALITY- must be added. Not only equality between people of today generation, but also between future and today generation is considered important.
Recent years witnessed an increasing accentuation in literature on governmental ethics partly due to ethical breaches increment in last years. Author explains these ethical transgressions with the increasing privatization, contracting out (outsourcing), third-party government. To prove this, author presents research findings and literature sources. According to the author, increasing privatization substitutes “idealism” with “careerism”. Resulting from this radical shift, private benefits and values dwarf ideals of public administration based mostly “patriotism of benevolence”.
Author strongly advocates that public organization is efficient and effective at least as is business organization. Bureaucrat-bashing reformist rhetoric created some prejudices about public organizations in the minds of citizens and caused people think that public organizations are unnecessary burdens on whole society although people are glad from their close relationships with public organizations in their neighborhood. This is explained in the book with the term “distance of paradox”. People do not make a distinction between public officials and elected officials and both are gathered in one category, which is “public”. Failure of political officials is connected to whole public sector, elected or appointed. It is not seen as surprise that officials who are involved in corruption are generally officials appointed by elected officials (politicians), according to the author. Second, bureaucrat-bashing propaganda of politicians and attitude of media shape the approach of citizens about public organizations and officials remote from their neighborhoods.
Author discusses the meaning of “neutrality” of public officials in the context of democratic society. According to the author, neutrality does not mean that public officials must follow government policy with eyes shut. Neutrality means non-partisan policy implementation by placing democratic values to the center of public service as essential guide and inalienable factor for efficiency or economy....
I would like to contribute to what author thinks about corruption in government. In the book, it is accepted that increasing corruption in public sector is related to erosion in values. But I think that ominous economic status of public officials should be taken into consideration to logically comment on corruption in public sector, especially in third-world countries.
That I reviewed above included only most important considerations that I needed to relate. You will find much more such as governance, high citizenship, intergenerational equality, the role of courts in democratic government and so on in the book. I believe that this book is an invaluable study and instigates readers to think on “PUBLIC” more deeply. Highly recommended.

One month past and still don't have it!!!!
By Mike D. Sanford
The book actually is pretty good and I know this because I had to purchase it somewhere else. I ordered the book on 8/18/09 and I still don't have it. The response I received when looking for the book was "it was being sent media mail and was within its delivery date". I order online alot and have never heard of this type of shipping, especially a book. I am assuming it is in someone's backpack and they are walking it across the country to deliver it to me personally. I ordered two other books at the same time and received them within the week. I will not order from this source again. I will be sending the book back as soon as it hits my doorstep and not via media mail.

Maisy takes to the air!
By Bob Walch
Maisy is off to Eddie's birthday party but she's going to fly her plane to get there. She also has a very special surprise in store for her friend and Maisy will need her airplane to deliver it. Toddlers love the books in this series because they are about half the size of a regular board book and they feature Maisy using various modes of transportation (train, tractor, etc.)

Easy to handle with bright colors that "pop" and attract the child's attention the illustrations here are bound to please and bring a smile to the face of any preschooler who loves this cute, little white mouse! This book goes to my granddaughter because she loves Maisy!
