I generally read 4 or 5 books at a time ...

I generally read 4 or 5 books at a time and slowly at that, but when I picked up Insects, I forsook all others and burned through the pages. I won’t give the story away, but I can still feel the damn things crawling on me – and that’s a complement to the author. Be brave and read the book. In real life, though, stay the hell out of the Amazon.

Partly great; partly not so great - but I'd read the sequel.

First let me say that despite only a 3-star rating, I enjoyed the book. There was a lot of good stuff in describing the rain forest, the growing fear of insects, and in the action between the insects and the characters in the book. I did expect action before it finally came and probably would have liked a bit more of it therefore, but it was great when it happened. I did find that a number of the characters really were not given any personality and could easily have been substituted for eachother. Then the characters that we were given more about - well, I didn't really like them! They weren't likable except for maybe a couple of them. All that took one star off my rating. The second star departs for the ending. It lacked something, it felt anit-climatic, and the story felt a little unfinished. I was disappointed. I understand a 2nd book will be released and chances are I'll end up reading it despite the points I was not happy about in the book simply because I love man vs predator or natural disaster stories.

Story Needed Culling a Bit Before the Group Goes into the Jungle and Expansion for What Happens at the End

Insects isn't the Sharknado, Jaws, Anaconda, Snakes on a Plane type creature slasher you might be after, but instead is an expedition by a group of Entomologists, consisting of mostly uni students from a South American university who want to be part of being a group to bring back the first live specimen of a rare bug that has only been quickly witnessed before it vanished by a few, and who the old professor has a few dead specimens of. The group either plan to write a paper, make a secret documentary on the experience or use the trip for some other purpose to promote their careers. Most in the group are pampered rich kids, or fishing guides who have never ventured far at all into the jungle but know enough to con rich American tourists that they do. Not many seem to have done much camping and none know much about survival in the wet season, including the guides more interested in what else they can get up to, to make some quick cash than the needs of their group. So when you throw in swarms of an insect that sees humans as something to eat, the odds this group will make it out alive are pretty small.

The story certainly isn't so enthralling that you can't put it down, but it is good enough that the next time you feel like reading something you'll continue the story just to see what happens. Insects probably could use a bit of culling in parts at the front before setting out, I mean we know they're going to go to the jungle, we don't need to read all the umming and arring before hand. I also found it difficult to remember which guide had the previous thoughts, which one stole the animal pelts from the cabin loner at the beginning and things like this, as the younger and older two on the hike were pretty similar to each other, as well as to the one who dropped them off in his boat. All even shared the same sort of thoughts as the two deserter local guards on the trip. If this was a movie this wouldn't really be an issue as you'd remember their faces but for a written story it needed a bit more differentiation, rather than them all being hesitant, not really understanding the purpose of the trip for the Americans, all seemingly having the dream to start their own profitable tour business or expand the one they have, and not really caring about the group as people, but just the money they'll pay them.

The ending contrary to the too much lead up had the opposite problem for the reader, the events happened to quickly. Spoilers - why were the rangers even there since it wasn't even safe due to the weather to really send boats, which was why the guy paid to pick them up didn't even go there until he was sort of guilted and forced to by the professor's assistant. The fact we just learn the survivors just got picked up and didn't even read these events through their eyes was a bit of a let down since we experience many tent conversations or walks along the trail, this would have been much more interesting. You also wonder why when they encounter the bugs and there's only a couple of insects when they are killing them on the truck that none of the students puts a live one in a container or something since that was the whole point they were out there in the first place. If not for that then to just work out how to kill them better when you encounter bigger numbers.

About the Author

Ronald Schow is Professor Emeritus at Idaho State University (ISU) where he has taught since 1975. Although semi-retired he continues to teach in the Audiology program in the Division of Health Sciences. Dr. Schow received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Utah State University and then earned a Ph.D. in Audiology from Northwestern University in 1974, with Raymond Carhart as his major professor. Before coming to ISU, he taught at Illinois State University (1972-75). Dr. Schow is the co-author of numerous books and journal articles including “Communication Disorders of the Aged” and the five previous editions of Introduction to Audiologic Rehabilitation. He has been awarded Fellow status in ASHA and in the International Collegium of Rehabilitative Audiology, where he was inducted as one of the original charter members.

Michael Nerbonne is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Communication Disorders at Central Michigan University, where he taught from 1981-2011. Prior to that, he was a professor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Idaho State University for eleven years. Dr. Nerbonne received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, where he also earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Audiology. He has published widely during his career in audiologic rehabilitation and is a Fellow of ASHA.

Good book to recommend to new .net developers.

This is the first book I recommend to people starting .NET. It gives a nice overview. When I made the transition from programming in C to .NET - I did not have any books that provided a higher level view of the .NET framework, tools, and development process. At that time the books mainly just restated what the MSDN pages had for info. It could be a bigger book and more info - but sometimes you give the extra star because the author(s) created something that's needed. After this book I'd recommend the C# Step By Step book.

This for sure is the start-up in learning .NET framework. I got this because I was studying php and sql. It gives much background information and shows what .NET is all about.

Computers are complicated but the complication is really many simple events taking place with rapidity. This shows some of the basic underbelly of the fascination we have with technology.

Thomas J. Gardner is a proven author and widely respected practicing attorney with more than fifty years of experience, including several years as an assistant district attorney in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mr. Gardner received his law degree from Marquette Law School.

Terry M. Anderson is Professor of Law at Creighton University School of Law. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968 and Juris Doctor degree in 1971 from the University of North Dakota, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and Case Editor of the North Dakota Law Review. After earning a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School in 1972, he joined the Creighton law faculty. He has been a visiting Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law, and the Denver University School of Law. He teaches Criminal Law, Contracts, and Secured Transactions in Personal Property.

Great introductory book for anyone interested in Criminal Law and Law in general.

A very informative, and thought provoking book. I especially like the critical thinking questions at the end of each chapter. I thought reading Supreme Court Cases would be the barest and driest torture ever imagined. But I am happy to say that, through this book, reading and understanding law and how it applies to society has proven to be an exciting venture. I recommend this book first and foremost to the college student interested and/or participating in a criminal law class. But I also recommend this book to individuals who are interested by law and how it applies and relates to society, and in this case the criminal justice system.

A beautiful book with a decent recipe!

There have been a number of mixed reviews about this book - in fact, there're quite a few negative ones that almost put me off trying to make anything from the recipes. I really wanted to know if this book was worth anything so I decided to prove it to myself. I am a decent baker; that is to say, I taught myself to cook and bake on a regular basis (often with good success!) but have no real culinary skills or knowledge. However, I do spend enough time in the kitchen to notice that the methods for doing various things in this book is quite different from most recipes that are commonly used. For example, the methods for mixing the cake mixture in Vanilla Cupcakes provide that you first combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and a bit of milk in one bowl; and some eggs, milk and vanilla extract in the other. Once thoroughly incorporated, the book tells you to mix the two together. Now, most recipes would ask you to first beat the egg and sugar in one bowl, add the milk and vanilla, follow by the dry ingredients. But I decided to stick closely to the recipes provided - using whatever amount of ingredients (which may seem "ridiculous" to many people) that the book suggests, and have my fingers crossed. The results? Well, the cupcake recipes (vanilla, chocolate and the velvet cupcakes) that I've attempted so far have turned out pretty good! They're all very tasty and do not appear to be "dry" or "inedible" in any way. My guess is that for those of you who are rather experienced would question the validity of the recipes and so instead of sticking to the book, would be tempted to do "what they think is best" - which is probably why there're more experienced bakers complaining about their various failures, etc. So my advice is for you to turn blind eyes and ears and just follow the recipes to the letter, even though your experience and "instinct" are telling you otherwise!

It is well laid-out, divided into several sections like cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, etc. The recipes include: the basic vanilla/chocolate cupcakes, lemon cupcakes, red velvet cupcakes, strawberry cheesecake cupcakes, lavender cupcakes, hazelnut and chocolate cupcakes, coconut and pineapple cupcakes, banana and chocolate cupcakes, pumpkin cupcakes, marshmallow cupcakes, ginger cupcakes, hummingbird cake, carrot cake, brooklyn blackout cake, coffee cake, blueberry cake, spiced pound cake, banana bread, nutty apple loaf lemon loaf, New York cheesecake, icebox banana cheesecake, lemon meringue pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, mississippi mud pie, apple pie, brownies, muesli bars, rocky road bars, ham and mushroom muffins, spinach and cheese muffins, blueberry muffins, banana and cinnamon muffins, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, white chocolate and pecan cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies, and gingerbread men. The photographs are all stunning, you get to see exactly what your cakes should look like.***

However, I must say that since I own over 200 books on cakes, cookies, ice cream and desserts, this book doesn't give you a very wide range of recipes - hence why I've given it 4 stars. The book is quite thin and it does have "enough" to keep you entertained for a while, but I prefer to have more choices so I usually have several books on very specific subjects. For example, if you're looking for a good book on cookies, I'd recommend "Martha Steward's Cookies", "The Good Cookie" and "Great Cookies"; for cakes, I'd recommend "Mary Berry's Ultimate Cake Book" and "Southern Cakes"; for cupcakes, I'd recommend "Cupcake Heaven", "The Crabapple Bakery Cupcake" and "Cupcakes: Luscious Bakeshop Favorites"; for general baking/desserts "Desserts by the Yard", "Maida Heatter's Book of Great Desserts", "Jim Fobel's Old-fashioned Baking Book"; for ice cream "Ices", "The Ultimate Book of Ice Cream", "The Perfect Scoops"; and for chocolate, I'd recommend "The Essence of Chocolate" and "Maida Heatter's Book of Great Chocolate Desserts".

Overall, if you're truly passionate about cakes and are NOT looking for "healthy" cakes (whatever that means!), you'll love this book. It'll be a great addition to your cook book collection, although I wouldn't say that this will be the ONLY book you'll need, because the book just simply doesn't offer enough varieties in the long-run. I've also been to the bakeries in London and I am happy to announce that my most recent batch did taste rather closely similar to the "real" things! I can assure you that this book will give you some great ideas and the pictures will be able to keep you coming back to the book time and time again!

P.S. I've also noticed that a few people have been comparing this book with Magnolia Bakery Book. I own all of them (2 by Magnolia, 2 by Buttercup Bakeshop and The Hummingbird Bakery) - and I'd NEVER pick the Buttercup Bakeshop over the other two. In fact, The Hummingbird bakery book actually contains MORE cupcakes recipes than those Magnolia books! It should also be noted that none of these books offer "healthy" goodies! Have fun baking!

Hit and miss

I am a perfectly adequate baker - I know how to follow a recipe and bake often (at least every weekend). The red velvet cupcakes turned out fairly well and that is the best cream cheese icing ever! However, the Black Bottom Cupcakes don't work. I followed the recipe exactly - converting back to metric using the table in the back of the book (I'm from Australia) and the batter for the chocolate part was so thick it broke by hand mixer, it was even thicker than most cookie dough and the cheese cake part wouldn't come together. So the next day I tried again, this time paying extra special attention to the recipe with the same result. I do note that if you look up the recipe online it has different values against the ingredients (which I haven't tried yet)........ is there a mistake in the book in the conversions?? If so shouldn't there be a disclaimer when you buy?? Honestly not sure I want to try any other recipes and waste money on ingredients that get thrown in the bin.

Actionable Knowledge on How to Profit on Sentiment Analysis

Trading on Sentiment assumes there are patterns in the markets and that a subset of these patterns are driven on sentiment. The book sheds light on how to use this information to profit in the markets. This is the first book of its kind I have ever read, and I have read a fair number of books on finance.

I have read a few books on behavioral finance in the past, and while they provided interesting and some potentially useful information, I believe Trading on Sentiment provided more valuable, actionable, and thoroughly explained insights on how to actually trade using behavioral finance principles. For instance, one of the books I read previously used the Rosemarie Nagel experiment as an analogy to explain how traders attempt to predict each other. The first book, however, came to the conclusion that predicting markets is inconsistent at best. By contrast, Trading on Sentiment used the experiment as motivation to begin a discussion on game theory strategy levels and how they play out in modern behavioral finance.
While the book might seem to be set on the notion that sentiment is the prime mover of asset prices, the author actually maintains a fairly impartial tone on the matter throughout the book. Instead of falling down the rabbit hole of speculation, the author reframes the question to a more manageable and precise form - What causes traders to buy and sell? Simply, traders respond to information relevant to an emotion, mental model, belief, or expectation. This is the assumption the rest of the book proceeds from, and the author provides real evidence from behavioral finance to support this claim.

Chapter five is the first chapter that delves into predictive analysis based on sentiment data, and I found it to be one of the most valuable chapters of the book. Chapter five’s discussion of forecasting models built with TRMI data towards the end of the chapter was especially enlightening.

The book uses the Thomson Reuters MarketPsych Indices (TRMI) as its primary source of actionable sentiment data. The TRMI target a number of market-moving sentiments based on news and social media sentiment. The book also cites earnings conference call transcripts, product reviews, and Google Trends (search) data to explain sentiment trading principles. I found the TRMI data to be the most valuable in general because it distilled sentiment and investor expectation down to a single indicator that could be plotted over a price chart. In addition, it aggregates a number of disparate sentiment sources using large scale text analysis and is specifically built for trading on sentiment.

All in all I found the book to be well written and an excellent primer to trading on sentiment from a professional who knows what he is talking about.

The most detailed book I've read on trading sentiment

Richard Peterson's books have always been very enjoyable and this one is no exception.

I was impressed by the amount of researches that this book cited and the details of the discussions.

One thing I don't like that much is the conflicts of interest in this book.

The data used in this book is not freely available to the public and most of the strategies in this book use this data. I wish MarketPsych team could release at least 5 years of data for us to test on.

As a Tactical Trader, Sentiment Analysis is one of the pillars my process is built on. Trading on Sentiment is great introduction for novice traders and refresher for the experienced. It is well written and while contradictory at time, doesn't read like a dry academic tome. Thomson Reuters MarketPsych Indices (TRMI) is arguably the most comprehensive sentiment analysis platform available to Market Professionals and to have TRMI data provide the backdrop for the content in this book makes it exponentially more valuable.

Should be added to reading lists of Trading Firms the world over.
