The Messianic Secret, which one century on is still the point of departure for all studies of the Gospel of Mark and of an understanding of the literary methods of the Gospel writers, is now available in English in this translation by J.C.G. Greig. Wrede's primary concern in his discussion of Mark is the doctrine of the messianic secret, the notion of a Jesus who, assuming messiahship at baptism, keeps it secret for much of his ministry until, after the confessions of Peter, he introduces the disciples to the idea of a suffering and dying Messiah. The idea of such a secret can be shown, from a study of the other Gospels, to have developed variously, and above all to go back to a period prior to Mark's work as the earliest evangelist. Wrede finds the theological source of the idea of a secret about the messiahship in a contrast between what the Church came to think of Jesus and how his life had been understood during his ministry. He suggests that because the Church came to think of Jesus as Messiah after the Resurrection, they came to explain the lack of explicit declaration of his messiahship by Jesus during his ministry by suggesting that (nevertheless) Jesus had after all secretly revealed himself as the Messiah. The doctrine of the messianic secret is, says Wrede, the after-effect of the idea of the Resurrection as the beginning of Jesus' messianic office". Furthermore, if this doctrine could have arisen only at a time when nothing was known of any open claim on Jesus' part to be Messiah, this seems to be positive evidence that Jesus actually did not represent himself as Messiah. Wrede was among the first to recognise the creative contribution of the writers of the Gospels, and to emphasise the necessity of a historical approach to the Church's traditions if we are to avoid a naive misunderstanding of the perspective from which the Gospels are written. His work is thus the foundation stone not only in the study of Mark, about whom he still has much to teach us, but also in the vexed area of the contribution of the evangelists to the Gospel. In this field Wrede's work is still essential reading, unsurpassed by the advances of the Form Critics, the Redaction Critics, whose work draws directly on his, and even of the more advanced literary critics of the present day.

About the Author
William Wrede was born in 1859 at Bucken in Hanover. He became an associate professor at Breslau in 1893, and full professor in 1896. He died in office in 1906. Dr J.C.G. Greig was sometime Professor of New Testament at Westminster College, Cambridge, and lecturer on Religious Education at Jordanhill College of Education, Glasgow.

WAS JESUS' MESSIAHSHIP A "SECRET" UNTIL AFTER THE RESURRECTION?

Georg Friedrich Eduard William Wrede (1859-1906) was a German Lutheran theologian, who was a professor at the University of Breslau; he also wrote Paul:. He wrote in the "Author's Preface" to this 1901 book, "For some time my particular attention has been claimed by ... whether Jesus saw himself as Messiah and so represented himself... Examination of the available tradition is, however, the subject which immediately concerns us..." (Pg. 1)

He observes, "If Jesus repeatedly commands sick people... to keep the fact of their healing secret, he nevertheless frequently performs his miracles in the full glare of publicity. Here lies an inner contradiction in Mark's presentation... Were the public healings to begin at a definite moment when these injunctions cease, then one could speak of a change of habit on the part of Jesus, occasioned by circumstances... since many of the miracles are public, the later prohibitions found after miraculous deeds lose their point." (Pg. 17)

He asserts, "during his earthly life Jesus' messiahship is absolutely a secret and is supposed to be such; no one apart from the confidants of Jesus is supposed to learn about it; with the resurrection, however, its disclosure ensues. This is in fact the crucial idea, the underlying point of Mark's entire approach." (Pg. 68) He states, "It emerges that ... Jesus' being and everything connected with it is ... a secret---not merely a secret of his consciousness but... an objective secret. Now it does not, of course, follow from this ... that this secret has to remain a secret for ever during the earthly life of Jesus and that he is himself consistently resolved on KEEPING it secret." (Pg. 80)

He points out, "These remarks [Mk 8:31-32, 9:31-32, 10:33-34] have often given occasion for the conclusion that Jesus could not have spoken so plainly about the end of his life as in the foregoing prophecies. We shall leave this conclusion aside, but the view of the passages on which it rests is correct. Jesus speaks of his passion and resurrection in such plain language that it is incomprehensible how there should have be anything incomprehensible in them!" (Pg. 94) He adds, "Jesus does not indeed MAKE a secret of his suffering and resurrection with his disciples, but it REMAINS a secret to them. But it is further tacitly supposed that afterwards, i.e., naturally, after the Resurrection, the secret falls like scales from their eyes." (Pg. 95)

He sums up, "We can find in Mark two ideas: (1) Jesus keeps his messiahship a secret as long as he is on earth; (2) He does, of course, reveal himself to the disciples in contrast to the people, but to them too he remains in his revelations incomprehensible for the time being. Both ideas... have behind them the common view that real knowledge of what Jesus is only begins with his resurrection. This idea of the secret messiahship covers a significant field in Mark. It dominates many sayings of Jesus, numerous miracle stories, and the entire course of the narrative as a whole." (Pg. 114) Later, he explains, "I have consistently kept two ideas apart: first that Jesus hid his messiahship and his being Son of God till the Resurrection and secondly that he was not understood by the disciples prior to this moment." (Pg. 210)

He concludes, "we now have a Christian approach the near relationship of which to ours can hardly be denied. This is the idea that Jesus becomes messiah only with the Resurrection." (Pg. 215) He adds later, "It may have been the original idea that Jesus was not known as messiah, and only the later idea that he WANTED to be unknown... If our view could only arise where nothing is known of an open messianic claim on Jesus' part, then we would seem to have it in a positive historical testimony for the idea that Jesus did not give himself out as messiah." (Pg. 230)

The vast majority of books about Jesus, or studies of the gospels, are quite "dated" after more than 100 years; Wrede's book, however, remains of current relevance and interest to anyone studying Jesus, or the gospels.

Wonderful, and I Almost Missed It!

The first time I looked into this book, I started with the sample chapters, and didn't even make it past the first page. I hated the place where it began, with bits of dialogue and boring information slipped into in a setting I found worse than boring. I deleted the sample chapters in, I'd say, about 30 seconds tops, and then went searching for a new book. And I searched....and searched....

After failing miserably to find anything hopeful, I decided, well, one reviewer of Riding the Odds said it took them a couple of chapters to get into the story so, maybe I'll give it another shot. I did, and ended up struggling far enough through the book to purchase it.

Free sailing from there? Not quite. After I finally made it past the difficult sample chapters (and yes, I really did hate them) I made it to the point where Trace entered the scene, and it got even worse for me. Every two seconds the pov character would think about how sexy the other one was and how they wanted to jump them and have lots of babies. It was so bad it took me three days to get past that part and finally on to the rest of the story (yes, they eventually stopped thinking, every other sentence, about wanting to jump each other) which I found to be an utterly wonderful story written about strong characters that I couldn't put down.

Despite how much I hated the beginning, the writing was so fresh and enjoyable, and was riddled with unique movements and beats between dialogue. For example: "She paused and held her hands up in the what-can-you-do gesture." (My personal favorite) There was stuff like that all through the book, and I loved it. Another thing I appreciated was the fact that Tara remained strong throughout the entire story. I really despise how the vast majority of the time, strong female characters are eventually dominated and coerced into giving in to the stronger male character who practically forces them to acknowledge their vulnerability, and his strength. Seriously? Kill me! Strong women don't just turn weak like that. It's pathetic.

Tara in this story never did anything she didn't choose to do, remained strong from start to finish, and yet still formed an unbreakable and incredibly sweet bond to the equally strong Trace. It was a bond created naturally, based off mutual respect, and without Tara turning into a weak and vulnerable woman in desperate need of Trace's manly strength. I thought it was beautifully written.

And the biggest reason why I chose to post this review is because of how hard I struggled to get into the story, and how much I would have missed out on had I not pushed through it. The chapters I considered annoying didn't last long, and the rest of it I wouldn't have missed for the world. So if you pick up the book and find yourself wanting to put it down, just give it a little bit longer.

Desperate to find a missing princess, Trace will do whatever it takes including using Tara’s secret past to blackmail her but something about the feisty ship captain stirs his desire – even if she is a wanted criminal in this tantalizing sci-fi fantasy romance.

The characters grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning, Tara as the feisty spitfire heroine with a past that she desperately needs to keep hidden and Trace is the strictly by the book Holy Knight who breaks all of his rules to find the missing princess. The reader can’t help but get caught up in their romance as they both learn some hard truths and trust while trying to stay alive and with the explosive chemistry between them makes for some very entertaining clashes. While their attraction may burn hot their relationship will takes lots of give and take to even have a hope of achieving an HEA which provides quite a few chuckles for readers along the way in this steady to fast paced and smooth flowing adventure of a romance.

Lots of excitement ensures that there is never a dull moment whether it is because of the romance, finding the princess, Zie’s charming insistence, their fiery clashes or trying to stay alive and lots of twists and turns keeps readers wondering what will happen next. The well written scenes and detail paint vivid images that capture the imagination and bring the story to life and the fascinating new world draws the readers and ensures that they can’t put the book down until they have read every last word.

This story had me completely enthralled from the very beginning with its interesting and different elements and I loved all the intriguing characters and fascinating creatures, especially Zie and including the lion ant…even if it did try to eat Tara and Trace. I don’t know if Lynda K Scott intends on writing more books in this tantalizing world but I certainly hope so because I would love to go on more adventures with these characters and their charming riders.

I liked the world that Ms. Scott created, a really interesting premise and engaging characters.

We have Tara on one hand. I really loved her character, guys. She was so strong, yet very vulnerable once you get to meet her and hear her back story. I just wanted her to finally have her happy ending, this girl deserved it like hell. Tara went through a lot, and most of it was alone, yet she still kept fighting. Loved, loved her.

I also loved the idea of a living tattoo. Zie was a great companion, and since they could communicate with each other, she served as a great counselor when Tara needed advice. I really liked their relationship, Zie was more than just a living tattoo, she was a friend. It still didn’t mean that Tara didn’t feel lonely, though.

Enter Trace.

I wasn’t sure if I liked this guy or not, he was such a jerk at the beginning, and even when I understood where he was coming from, I still wanted to punch him. He had a lot of secrets, as did Tara, and many of them were even dangerous to her. I did like that he was crazy loyal, even when some of that loyalty was misplaced.

In the end, the guy wasn’t that bad and I was glad that he gave Tara a chance after learning her story. He started pretty judgmental towards her in the beginning of the book.

There was a lot of adventure here and some mystery to unravel, as well as romance between Trace and Tara. I don’t know if there are plans for more of this story, but I was really interested in what would happen after the book was over. Did Trace clean her name and of her friends? Was the real killer brought to justice? I would really like to know what happens with them after the end of the book.

An entertaining story in the end.

This book is great if your taking any type of ethics class. Or perhaps a good tool for understanding the different perspectives modern people and modern philosopers have today. Its simple and easy to read. The text is not wordy and quite straightforward. The actual book was a bit dirty with some water damage when recieved but, it was in a "used condition." This book is a great tool for the average person.

I'm so excited that Is Authoritarianism Staging a Comeback? is finally here! This is a unique view of the rising tide of authoritarian dictators but, with that, more people-powered social movements that are proving the best and most untapped weapon against it. Burrows and Stephan offer an inspiring view of what's possible if, like dictators, we could all learn from the collective actions courageous individuals are catalyzing all over the world in democracies and backsliding autocracies alike.

Realms of Memory is a monumental collective endeavor by France's leading intellectuals, exploring the cathedrals and palaces, the rituals, legends, and episodes that form the landscape of French consciousness. The first volume, Conflicts and Divisions, reflects on symbols of political, religious, regional, and generational difference that structure France's self-definition. The book begins with the political clashes that have carved a path through French history and memory, between Franks and Gauls, French and foreigners, Vichy and all other regimes. Contributors explore shifting conceptions of political meaning over centuries, from the often irreverent portrayals of Gauls in such popular media as the Asterix comics to nostalgic reimaginings of pre-revolutionary France by modern ultranationalists. A second section analyzes sites and events of the religious conflicts that underlie French identity. The authors chronicle the manufacture of remembrance, as seen in the Protestant festivals held each September to commemorate the persecution of Huguenots in the sixteenth-century Wars of Religion; and of the processes of forgetting, witnessed in the assimilative tradition among French Jews that has hindered, if not prevented, rediscovery of a distinctively Jewish past and acknowledgements of the French legacy of anti-Semitism. Conflicts and Divisions concludes with a section on issues of time and place, and analysis of the cleavages that separate Paris and province, north and south, and human generations as demarcated by such transformative years as 1789 and 1968.

Key Work for Nearly Anyone Wishing to Truly Understand France's View of Its Own History

This acclaimed work of the 1980's and 1990's, which took over a decade to assemble and is composed of contributions by scores of expert authors, sets out to describe how the French people have "constructed" their history through symbols, allusions, and associations, and then have subsequently shifted that constructed memory into the public consciousness. The series, which took up seven volumes in the original French, has been described as "monumental," and there can be little doubt that this description is completely correct due to its size, scope, and coverage. But it is not just its size and scope that make the work "monumental." This is a set that is also superbly written by authors who have uniquely and expert knowledge of the subject matter, and the choice of topics, and the depth into which each is examined, easily makes this a de-facto standard work for anyone today wishing to have a true understanding of how the French themselves define what it means to be "French." It is certainly Pierre Nora's magnum opus, and if you possess anything more than a passing interest in French history, "Frenchness," and French semiotics, you will not want to pass on this work.

The current English translation here is, unfortunately, taken from a subset of the original seven volumes, reduced to three large volumes. Nora defends the reduction as maintaining the spirit of the original, in spite of the collection's selection list from the larger original. He may be right. But it is nevertheless unfortunate that the complete set was not translated into English. But, on the bright side--and indeed, it is bright--the translation here by Arthur Goldhammer is absolutely superb, with virtually no trace of the grammatical oddity that can occur when translating between French and English, and vice-versa. The text reads as smoothly, accurately, and clearly as though it was originally written in English.

The content is absolutely superb. Volume 1 focuses on politics, minority religions, and divisions of time and space, which probably doesn't mean anything when you first hear it, but once you read the preface and get into the content, the rationale for these choices of topics and chapters is quintessentially French. For example, why do the French overwhelmingly regard the Gauls as their ancestors, yet rarely have any historical landscape markers to the Gauls in a country replete with historical signposts in every village? And we thought it was not the Gauls, but the Franks, who were the progenitors of the French nation! So, is it Gauls, or Franks? And what about the belief that the political "left" and "right" originated in the French Revolution, yet earlier references in French works seem to identify this concept as previously existing in England? And what about the tension between Gaulists vs. Communists, Catholics vs. Seculars, French vs. Foreigners, the Ancient Regime vs. the Revolution? Nora's book looks at the construction of French history through the symbols that are a part of each historical milieu, and the passing of these symbolic references into an evolving historical story.

This is a book as fascinating to read as it is beneficial to learning, and it really should be on your list if you wish to understand France as the French views it. And although the volumes can be quite expensive, you can occasionally find a few copies in the used marked in very good shape at a good price. I highly recommend this series as one that is fascinating, complex, evocative, and unusual. An easy five stars for what must be considered a monumental and influential work.

About the Author
Leon I. Hammer, M.D. is a graduate of Cornell University, Cornell Medical College, and the William A. White Institute of Psychoanalysis and Psychiatry. During the early 1970s he studied Chinese medicine in England with Dr. Richard Van Buren, and then apprenticed for eight years in New York and Massachusetts with Dr. John H.F. Shen, a widely recognized master of Chinese pulse diagnosis. Dr. Hammer practiced Chinese medicine until 1990, when he began teaching pulse workshops in the United States and abroad. He is the author of Dragon Rises, Redbird Flies, a study of the relationship between Chinese medicine and Western psychology, and is president of the Dragon Rises School of Oriental Medicine in Gainesville, Florida.

Completely new way of looking at emotional issues

I bought this for a gift for a friend who is an open minded psychiatrist. It's fascinating stuff. Emotional problems and mental illness are viewed and described through the prism of Oriental Medicine, which is interested in getting to the root cause. Some of it is a bit technical for those of us who don't have a background in Oriental thinking and medicine, but most of the book describes cases and is an interesting and thought provoking read for the intelligent layperson. Highly recommended for everyone interested in or dealing with mental/emotional problems. Fascinating and different.

Will improve the understandings and hence healing outcomes of any practitioner -- great read for anyone interested in healing or who is going through a challenge. A magnificent read.

Eastern Healing for the Western Mind

Dr. Hammer is very informed & experienced with Chinese medicine. Great effort integrating Eastern time honored methods & principles with Western medicine. I wish he would address more regarding psychodynamic therapy given his training as a psychoanalyst as well. I believe that psychodynamic therapy, the abiltiy to very deeply understand another, is as transforming as Chinese medicine.

Chad W. Hood lives in Raleigh, North Carolina with his wife Heather and their five sons. He is the Associate Pastor at Bay Leaf Baptist Church where he has served for over 15 years. GO DISCIPLE- is a must read for anyone who genuinely desires to understand what Jesus meant when He said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” This statement is the crux of the Christian life and often we struggle to fully understand its meaning.
GO DISCIPLE is an excellent tool for wrapping our minds and hearts around the truth of Christ’s words. It is heart piercing, heart searching, heart challenging, heart blessing and heart transforming all at the same time! These are not idle words they are the essence of the Christian life as we seek to follow Christ and GO DISCIPLE.

Well worth your time to read!

I loved GoDisciple. I wish I could get this book in the hands of every pastor, church member, and skeptic. GoDisciple shows what it means to live a crucified life for Jesus Christ. If you want to know what it looks like to be a disciple of Christ who is a disciple-maker, then I highly recommend this book.

Outstanding book, well written with good illustrations, challenging, very thought provoking, insightful and heart searching. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to deepen their faith and strengthen their walk of discipleship. I loved the book so much bought another to send to a friend.
