Fluid Dynamics, by Peter S. Bernard

This book presents a focused, readable account of the principal physical and mathematical ideas at the heart of fluid dynamics. Graduate students in engineering, applied math, and physics who are taking their first graduate course in fluids will find this book invaluable in providing the background in physics and mathematics necessary to pursue advanced study. The book includes a detailed derivation of the Navier-Stokes and energy equations, followed by many examples of their use in studying the dynamics of fluid flows. Modern tensor analysis is used to simplify the mathematical derivations, thus allowing a clearer view of the physics. Peter Bernard also covers the motivation behind many fundamental concepts such as Bernoulli's equation and the stream function. Many exercises are designed with a view toward using MATLAB or its equivalent to simplify and extend the analysis of fluid motion including developing flow simulations based on techniques described in the book.

About the Author
Professor Peter Bernard has 35 years' experience in teaching graduate level fluid mechanics at the University of Maryland. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In addition to his many research articles devoted to the physics and computation of turbulent flow, he is the coauthor of the highly regarded volume Turbulent Flow: Analysis, Measurement and Prediction that has been hailed as 'probably the best for classroom use or private study' (Journal of Fluid Mechanics).

Flowing high-level treatment of Fluid Dynamics
By SeferTech
This is a brand new textbook on an old subject, namely fluid dynamics. It is written by a long time leader and contributor in the field. I really like this book! Why? First, it is clearly written and a pleasure to read. Second, it covers many diverse, but related and relevant fluid dynamics topics with a level of detail and clarity rarely found in other "advanced" fluid dynamics books (with the noted exception of Batchelor's classic text). Third, the book's online website features additional resources including Powerpoint slides containing figures from the text, solutions to the many intriguing exercises, and MATLAB codes for the exercises. This is an instructors dream come true! While I have not read the entire text cover to cover (which is literally hard to do when you have the Kindle edition), allow me to list a few of the sections I found to feature clear and detailed presentations: derivation of streamfunction definition from first principles and the velocity field (the relationship between the velocity field and derivatives are usually just stated in most treatments where you then plug them into the continuity equation which is then magically satisfied), the derivative of the Helmholtz decomposition allowing determination of the velocity field from the dilatation and the vorticity field, a rigorous and clear presentation of the usually boring hydrostatics, and so much more! I can hardly wait to read the rest of the book! The only topic not covered is turbulence - but for that you can read the author's other well written book "Turbulent Flow: Analysis, Measurement and Prediction".

Very nice exposition of the beauty of mathematics applied to fluids, excellent for self study or just to enjoy.
By Stanley Starr
I really like this book! It falls into the category of theoretical fluid dynamics as it applying vector and tensor analysis to fluids ranging from ideal to real in varying stages. It appears to be very clearly written and loaded with reasonably complete math and lots of verbal insight into the equations. The figures are relatively simple consistent with a theory book. I wish I had the time to write a more comprehensive and comparative review but it is somewhat less dense with math than the recent and more challenging "Fluid Dynamics, Part 1 Classical Fluid Dynamics" by Ruban, et. al. Bernard applies modern notation (an improvement over some classic and more difficult to read classic texts). He also writes clearly and brings out for me the beauty of the interplay between the mathematics and the physics. Instructors might have preferred more problems. But this is a book to read and enjoy and very suitable for self study. It is also beautifully produced.
