A Fascinating Look At The Life Of A Hobo

"A No. 1"(his Hobo nickname) is Leon Ray Livingston (1872-1944) one of the most famous hobos who ever lived. He wrote and self-published many books on hobo culture and train travel. He claimed to have ridden "The Road" (hobo jargon for the railroads)500,000 miles on just $7.61 cents.(a dollar went an incredibly long way at that time)He was self taught and retired from hobo life and lived a respectable life of an author, and his story telling of life as a hobo is unrivaled. His writing style reflected the classic English of his time, when even the lowliest men spoke like college graduates of today.
His many stories paint a picture of the hard life of the hobo, who struggled his way through life doing odd jobs here and there. Facing hunger and danger day to day, pulling off clever and often hilarious schemes to keep one step ahead of the railroad detectives who saw the hobo both as a nuisance and a tragic byproduct of the poor economic times.'A No. 1' reveals a character who strove to do right, but was forced at times to spin sad tales of personal woe to secure a meal for himself,but refrained from thievery,while willfully living a life of the hobo and the freedom which only hobos experienced. He wrote eight books about life on "The Road" and you will probably be hooked as I was into being a fan of "A No. 1".

Ways of the Hobo review

I have to say I was impressed with his matter of fact writing style. It is a hard life! His first person narrative and use of old english is what makes his stories all the more fascinating. His iron road stories are full of personal pain and anguish. He seems to get a small sense of victory when he turns someone away from trampdom.

A--No. 1, rode the trains back in the day, you gotta love the life of a 'bo. This book puts those adventures in detail. Written in circa 1905 English, which is lovely to read.
